Craig Federighi Says iPhone Duo Can Fill The iPad Mini Gap

Craig Federighi has confirmed what the spec sheet already suggested: iPhone Duo and iPad mini are now aimed at the same customer.

Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering sat down with Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) this week to discuss the new foldable ahead of its October launch.

iPhone Duo Display Sizes

iPhone Duo’s Inner Display Is Nearly The Same Size As iPad Mini

iPhone Duo unfolds to a 7.6-inch inner display. The current iPad mini runs an 8.3-inch screen. That’s a 0.7-inch gap, closer than any two Apple devices have ever sat next to each other in the lineup.

iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. iPad mini starts at $499. Apple just built the iPad mini’s core selling point, a bigger screen than your phone, directly into the phone.

Federighi Compares The Shift To iPad And Mac

Federighi’s framing for the overlap leans on Apple’s own history. iPad and Mac usage settled into distinct patterns over time, even after years of people asking which one they actually needed.

He expects iPad and iPhone Duo to sort themselves out the same way, through everyday use rather than a rule Apple sets in advance.

Federighi Admits iPhone Duo Directly Replaces iPad Mini For Some Users

Pressed specifically on the iPad mini, Federighi didn’t dodge it. He described his own habit of starting on iPhone, then opening iPhone Duo in portrait mode to read and page through longer content when he wants to go deeper.

He then said plainly that for someone who owned an iPad mini, iPhone Duo “can often fill that space for them.”

Apple Rebuilt iOS Around The Fold Instead Of Stretching It

Federighi drew a line against the rest of the foldable market. He argued that competitors have largely stretched or crammed existing phone software into new folding shapes, while Apple treated iOS on iPhone Duo as a ground-up design problem from day one.

iPhone Duo pre-orders open October 16, with the device shipping October 23 across more than 70 countries.
