Apple put three new iPhones on sale within six weeks of each other this fall. iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max ship September 18. iPhone Duo follows on October 23. If you’re deciding between a Pro model and the Duo, the choice isn’t which phone is better. It’s which features you can live without.

iPhone Duo Trades the Telephoto Lens for a Digital Crop
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max carry a real 48MP Fusion Telephoto lens at 100mm, giving you 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. iPhone Duo has no dedicated telephoto lens. Its main 48MP Fusion camera handles zoom through an “optical-quality” 2x crop instead.
If you photograph kids’ sports from the sideline, concerts from the back of the venue, or anything else needing real reach, the Pro models are the only option here.
iPhone Duo’s Main Camera Skips Variable Aperture
The headline camera feature on iPhone 18 Pro is variable aperture, letting the 48MP Fusion Main camera shift between f/1.48 and f/4.0 for more control over depth of field and low light. iPhone Duo’s main camera doesn’t get this feature. It shoots at a fixed aperture, which limits how much creative control you have over background blur and exposure.
iPhone Duo Has No LiDAR Scanner
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max include a LiDAR Scanner, which measures depth for augmented reality apps and helps autofocus lock faster in low light. iPhone Duo skips it entirely. If you use AR measurement apps, night portraits that rely on LiDAR-assisted focus, or any app built around depth mapping, that functionality isn’t there on the Duo.
The Front Camera Drops From 18MP to 12MP on iPhone Duo
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max use an 18MP Center Stage front camera. iPhone Duo’s front-facing camera sits under the inner display to keep the screen uninterrupted, and that engineering trade-off comes with a resolution drop to 12MP. Selfies and FaceTime calls will look noticeably softer on the Duo compared to the Pro models.
iPhone Duo Drops the Action Button
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max keep the customizable Action Button for quick shortcuts like launching the camera, toggling silent mode, or triggering a Shortcut. iPhone Duo doesn’t have a Silent Switch or an Action Button. Camera Control is still there, but if you’ve built habits around the Action button specifically, you’ll need to relearn your shortcuts on the Duo.
iPhone Duo Also Skips Pro Controls, ProRAW, and Spatial Video
A handful of the Pro camera app’s deeper features don’t carry over to the Duo. That includes Pro controls for manual shutter speed and white balance, ProRAW and ProRes RAW capture, and spatial photos and videos. If you shoot for editing flexibility or capture spatial content for Vision Pro, the Pro models are built for that. The Duo’s camera app is aimed at everyday shooting, not professional workflows.
iPhone Duo Swaps Face ID for Touch ID
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max keep Face ID, now paired with a redesigned Dynamic Island that shows three Live Activities at once. iPhone Duo swaps it for Touch ID built into the side button, the same approach Apple uses on iPad Air and iPad mini.
For most people this is a wash rather than a real loss. Touch ID unlocks fast and works whether the phone is open or closed. But if you rely on Face ID for hands-free purchase authentication, the switch takes some adjusting.
Buy iPhone 18 Pro and You Give Up the Big Screen
iPhone 18 Pro tops out with a single Super Retina XDR display. iPhone Duo gives you two, a 5.4-inch outer screen for quick tasks and a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple says is 50 percent larger than even the Pro Max screen.
That size unlocks Split View, letting you run two full apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time. You also miss out on Duo’s folding camera tricks, including Duo Preview and Duo FaceTime, both of which use the outer screen as a second viewfinder.
Neither Phone Gives You Peak Battery Life
iPhone 18 Pro Max wins outright here, rated for up to 45 hours of video playback. iPhone 18 Pro trails at up to 36 hours. iPhone Duo battery ranges from 31 hours on the inner display, up to 44 hours if you stick to the outer screen only, and up to 24 hours with both screens in equal use.
Picking the Duo for its bigger screen means accepting shorter runtime the moment you actually use that screen.
The $700 Price Gap Buys a Second Screen, Not a Better Camera
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, and iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199. That gap holds at every storage tier, from 256GB up to 2TB.
For that extra money, you’re not getting a stronger camera, more zoom, or a faster chip. All three phones run the same A20 Pro. You’re paying for the folding mechanism and the second display, along with everything you lose to make room for the hinge.
