MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR vs MacBook Pro is a $400 price gap that buys a tandem OLED touchscreen and a body up to 0.7 pounds lighter. Apple kept the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips and the same rated battery hours as the MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR Display, which is still on sale.
The MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display opened for pre-order on October 28 with delivery from Friday, November 6, and it comes with M5 Pro or M5 Max only. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 has no PROLED XDR version and keeps the older display.
MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR vs MacBook Pro price gap
Every PROLED XDR model costs $400 more than the matching Liquid Retina XDR model, on both sizes and both chips. Each pair starts with the same memory and storage, 24GB and 1TB on M5 Pro and 36GB and 2TB on M5 Max.
| Model | Liquid Retina XDR | PROLED XDR | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro | $2,499 | $2,899 | $400 |
| 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max | $4,099 | $4,499 | $400 |
| 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro | $2,999 | $3,399 | $400 |
| 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max | $4,399 | $4,799 | $400 |
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999, which is $900 below the cheapest MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, and it keeps the older display. Nano-texture glass is offered on both lines.
The body loses up to 0.7 pounds
The 14-inch MacBook Pro loses 0.5 pound on both chips, from 3.5 to 3.0 pounds with M5 Pro and from 3.6 to 3.1 pounds with M5 Max. The 16-inch MacBook Pro falls from 4.7 to 4.0 pounds with M5 Pro, which is the biggest cut at 0.7 pound. With M5 Max it drops from 4.7 to 4.1 pounds.
Thickness shrinks from 0.61 to 0.59 inch on the 14-inch MacBook Pro and from 0.66 to 0.63 inch on the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 16-inch screen grows from 16.2 to 16.3 inches because the borders are slimmer, while the 14-inch screen stays at 14.2 inches.
The display gains brightness, contrast and Adobe RGB
Peak HDR brightness rises from 1,600 to 2,000 nits and contrast from 1,000,000:1 to 10,000,000:1 as the mini-LED panel gives way to tandem OLED. Sustained full-screen brightness is up to 1,000 nits on both, so the extra brightness shows up in highlights. Genlock over Thunderbolt 5 is new, and it needs compatible third-party hardware and software.
The PROLED XDR Display adds Adobe RGB to P3, with more than 80 percent Rec. 2020 coverage, and ProMotion now runs from 10Hz to 120Hz. Native resolution edges up to 3024 by 1986 on the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 3472 by 2266 on the 16-inch MacBook Pro at the same 254 pixels per inch. The nano-texture option is now etched into the cover glass.
Touch and the Dynamic Island are new on Mac
The touch sensor sits inside the display panel instead of on top of it. macOS turns touches into clicks, so many existing apps respond on day one. Touch support for Notion, Canva, Blender and DaVinci Resolve is due later this year, and Apple Creator Studio updates arrive in November.
The Dynamic Island becomes the home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI, and it handles phone calls, music controls and AirDrop requests. Spotlight moves there only when Siri AI is available and turned on, and Siri AI is a beta feature in macOS 27.2.
Chips, ports and battery hours stay the same
Both lines use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, with up to 128GB of memory on M5 Max. Three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC slot, MagSafe 3 and Wi-Fi 7 carry over. Storage is the one capacity change, with M5 Max models now reaching 16TB where the Liquid Retina XDR models stop at 8TB.
Apple’s battery ratings are identical by configuration, with the 14-inch MacBook Pro at 22 hours of video streaming on M5 Pro and 20 hours on M5 Max, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro at 24 and 22 hours. Battery capacity is 72.6Wh in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, up from 72.4Wh, and 100Wh in the 16-inch MacBook Pro as before.
Who should pay $400 more for the PROLED XDR Display
I would pay the $400 if you grade color or work on a set that needs genlock. Everyone else gets the same performance and battery hours on the MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR Display, and the $400 can go toward memory or storage instead.
Touch and the Dynamic Island exist only on the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, so weigh those before the display. The cheapest one is the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro at $2,899, against $2,499 for the same configuration with Liquid Retina XDR Display.
