16TB MacBook Pro Starts at $11,499 and Needs M5 Max

The 16TB MacBook Pro arrived on October 28 with Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro, doubling the 8TB limit of the March models. Only M5 Max configurations can reach it, which puts the cheapest 16TB build at $11,499 on the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Both sizes of the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display offer the option at the same upgrade prices. Pre-orders opened in 30 countries and regions, including the US, with deliveries starting Friday, November 6.

16TB MacBook Pro adds $7,000 and needs M5 Max

Starting from the included 2TB on the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max, 4TB adds $1,000. Moving to 8TB adds $3,000, and 16TB adds $7,000. That works out to $500 for every added terabyte at each step, so 16TB costs the same per terabyte as 4TB.

The finished prices are $11,499 for the 14-inch MacBook Pro and $11,799 for the 16-inch MacBook Pro, both with the 32-core GPU and 36GB of memory. The 40-core GPU and 128GB of memory are not required, because both M5 Max GPU options offer 16TB.

The M5 Pro models stop at 4TB, and so does the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6. That makes moving to M5 Max the only route to 8TB or 16TB, and it starts $1,600 higher on the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

A 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base M5 Pro and 4TB costs $4,399, which is $100 less than a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max and its included 2TB. On the 16-inch MacBook Pro, the same 4TB M5 Pro build costs $4,899.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro tops out at $14,549 with M5 Max, the 40-core GPU, 128GB of memory, 16TB of storage and nano-texture glass. Storage accounts for $7,000 of that total, under half.

Pairing 16TB with 128GB of memory requires the 40-core GPU, a $300 option that also requires at least 48GB of memory. For 8TB, the cheapest touchscreen MacBook Pro is the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max at $7,499, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro costs $7,799.

Apple Card Monthly Installments run $983.25 a month for 12 months on the $11,799 16-inch MacBook Pro with 16TB. An Apple Upgrade lease on the same build starts at $259.45 a month for 36 months before taxes.

Apple’s 2x speed claim compares 16TB with an M4 Max

Storage is up to twice as fast in Apple’s own tests, measured on a 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max and 16TB against a 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Max and 8TB. The baseline is the M4 Max, so the figure says nothing about gains over the March MacBook Pro models or how the 2TB and 4TB configurations perform.
