Apple began selling a new World Travel Adapter Kit for $39 on October 28, the same day it announced the touchscreen MacBook Pro. The kit fits only the 70W Power Adapter and 140W Power Adapter, and it has five plugs instead of seven.
Every plug uses a redesigned connector called AC Connector 2, which has a pill-shaped design that Apple says comes from updated regulations. The older AC Connector 1 has a notched design, and Apple has not said which regulations it means.
World Travel Adapter Kit fits only two chargers
Apple’s store page lists just two compatible chargers, the 70W Power Adapter at $59 and the 140W Power Adapter at $99. Extension cables and plugs are not cross-compatible between the two connector types, so a charger on AC Connector 1, such as the 96W Power Adapter or 35W Dual Port Power Adapter, cannot take these plugs.
Apple recommends the 140W Power Adapter for fast charging the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The 70W Power Adapter is the pick for the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air.
The $19 Power Adapter Extension Cable is sold in both connector versions, with the AC Connector 2 version made for the 70W Power Adapter and 140W Power Adapter. Some chargers began shipping with AC Connector 2 earlier this year, and owners reported that older extension cables and plugs would not fit. Look for a pill-shaped connector on newer chargers and a notched one on older ones.
Five plugs now, and India gets its own
The new kit has five plugs, down from seven in the earlier version, and it adds a Type D plug for India. Type A is for North America and Japan, Type C for continental Europe and Brazil, and Type D for India. Type G is for the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Singapore, and Type I is for Australia and New Zealand.
The seven-plug kit covered China, South Korea and Hong Kong, none of which appear in the new list. The product page links to a support page for more destinations, but that page lists none.
