The new MacBook Pro speakers use an all-new woofer design that Apple says delivers 50 percent deeper bass, and the laptop gets dedicated audio tuning for closed-lid use for the first time. The upgrade is part of the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, which Apple announced on October 28, 2026, in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes.
Apple’s announcement describes a six-speaker system that pairs the new woofers with new tweeters that shape how sound disperses. Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos is supported. The company does not say what the 50 percent is measured against.
MacBook Pro speakers get closed-lid tuning
The closed-lid tuning applies when the MacBook Pro is connected to an external display. That fits a common desk setup, with the lid shut and a monitor doing the work, and Apple calls it the first dedicated tuning for closed-lid use.
How the tuning works, and how much it changes the sound compared with playing audio at an open lid, has not been explained. I would want to hear it side by side before calling it a reason to skip desktop speakers.
Around the speakers, the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display has a three-mic array with Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum modes. It also has a 3.5 mm headphone jack with high-impedance support and an HDMI port with multichannel audio.
PROLED XDR models start at $2,899
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and M5 Pro starts at $2,899, and the 16-inch model starts at $3,399. Versions with M5 Max start at $4,499 for the 14-inch and $4,799 for the 16-inch. Education pricing is $2,749 and $3,199 for the M5 Pro models and $4,199 and $4,499 for the M5 Max models.
Apple also offers leasing from $55.99 a month for 36 months, excluding taxes and trade-in credit. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999 and keeps the Liquid Retina XDR display. Apple’s pages for it list a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio and do not mention the new woofers or closed-lid tuning.
Pre-orders opened on October 28 in the Apple Store app. The MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display arrives on Friday, November 6, in 30 countries and regions including the U.S.
