HomePod software 15 beta 3 brings Apple Music Lossless support to HomePod and HomePod mini

Apple has seeded HomePod software 15 beta 3 update to invited participants of the AppleSeed Program that includes support for Apple Music Lossless audio for HomePod and HomePod mini. After a little confusion, the company confirmed that both speakers will gain lossless audio support in an upcoming software update, “HomePod and HomePod mini currently use AAC to ensure excellent audio quality. Support for lossless is coming in a future software update.”

In May, Apple announced High Fidelity (HiFi) lossless audio and Spatial audio support coming to Apple Music without any additional cost. Lossless audio offers audio files with all of the original data, without losing any data to compression and Spatial audio delivers a surround experience. And now Apple Music subscribers can list to more the 75 million songs on the music streaming in Lossless Audio.

The company notifies the users that they should re-download the songs they already have to enjoy their lossless version. Streaming lossless audio in Apple Music will consume more data and downloading lossless songs will take more storage space. Users should use AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and Beats wireless headphones that use Apple AAC Bluetooth Codec for great audio quality.

Furthermore, the latest beta update is rolled out after multiple users reported bricking or overheating issues of the original HomePod running on iOS 14.6 and iOS 15 beta. As the release notes of the update do not include details of new fixes and improvements, it is presumed that the update will resolve the aforementioned issues.
