Everything new in iOS 16.4 beta 1 – Safari web push, emojis, more

Apple recently seeded the first developer beta of iOS 16.4. The new update includes several new features like Safari web push notifications, emojis, HomeKit Architecture, Focus mode, and more.

16 new features and improvements on iOS 16.4 beta 1

  • New web apps experience:
    • Safari web push notifications support for web apps added on the Home Screen on an iPhone and iPad. Like macOS, users can give permission to web apps on the Home Screens of iOS and iPadOS devices to send notifications. 
    • Focus mode can incorporate Home Screen web app notifications to be displayed in Daily Summaries or other ways.
    • Display notifications as Badges for Home Screen web apps
  • New Emojis include new heart colors, hand gestures, faces, objects, animals, signals like a hand fan, stop hand gestures, jellyfish, donkey, moose head, duck, flute, and others.

  • Users can add websites and web apps to the Home Screen easily from the Share menu in third-party browsers like Chrome. 
  • Upgraded HomeKit Architecture is re-launched in iOS 16.4 beta 1 with bug fixes
  • Podcasts app now features Channels access in the Library section and ‘Up Next’ allows users to play saved episodes, resume episodes, and remove episodes on iOS and CarPlay.
  • Apple Music features a more prominent icon or button to access subscribers’ profiles and settings.
  • Shortcuts app adds the ability to create workflows to lock a device’s screen and control the Always-on Display on iOS 16.4, along with controlling Stage Manager on iPadOS 16.4.
  • Focus Mode gains a new ‘Always On Display’ filter to easily and quickly turn it on and off.
  • Mastodon posts display the content’s preview when shared in the Messages app.  
  • Apple Card’s high-yield savings account features information like account number, current balance, data management, options to withdraw and add money, interest earned, and more.
  • Tips app includes user guides for Apple, Watch, AirPods, and HomePod, along with iPhone.
  • AppleCare gains a Coverage option in the Settings app which display warranty information for all covered Apple devices.
  • Beta opt-in options in the Settings app’s Sofware Update for users registered in the Apple developer program to either install developer beta or public beta. 
  • 5G support in Turkey 
  • 5G standalone support for T-Mobile
  • Improved Emergency SOS via Satellite includes granular timings, the hour and minute, of the next passing by satellite. Previously, the service showed an “available soon” alert.
