iPhone 12 mini sales are off to a slow start, according to analysts

The announcement of iPhone 12 mini was met with a lot of excitement from customers since it is a high-end smartphone that does not cut corners with specifications to get its small size. The smartphone features a new flat-edged design, a fast and efficient A14 chip, and 5G connectivity.

However, new reports say that the excitement about the smallest iPhone in Apple’s iPhone 12 lineup may not be translating to actual purchases. According to a recent report, iPhone 12 mini sales only accounted for 4-5% of sales at AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

iPhone 12 mini sales are off to a slow start, according to analysts

A new report, via PCMag, says that iPhone 12 mini was the least popular of the four iPhone 12 models in the first month of availability. The firm Wave7 Research spoke to carrier sales representatives and found that iPhone 12 mini only accounted for 4-5% of sales at AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

In comparison, iPhone 12 was the most popular model of the four and accounted for 24-33% of sales at the three major U.S. Carriers. iPhone 12 Pro Max was also more appealing to customers because of its 3-camera layout featuring the liDAR sensor.

iPhone 12 vs. iPhone 12 mini

These numbers can be corroborated by a separate report from Flurry Analytics. According to their research, not only was the 12 mini the least popular iPhone during its launch week, it was the least popular launch week iPhone model in the past three years.

With smartphone displays growing bigger and bigger with every new release, there are a ton of people who long for a device that can easily fit in their pocket and is suitable for one-handed use. The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini was manufactured for that specific demographic of people.

However, these recent analyst reports suggest that that’s not the case. There are a few possibilities why the 12 mini may not be selling as well as expected. The one compromise the device makes has to do with battery life, which is understandable given its smaller form factor, and so some customers may just lean toward the regular iPhone 12 which gives them more value for their money.

“Given the low use of iPhone 12 Mini, consumers may report that a more user-friendly device is not as important as it once thought. Spend an additional $ 100 for iPhone Pro 12 gets a 24% larger screen and better battery life than the iPhone 12 min. Also, the second-generation iPhone SE, launched earlier this year, could be cannibalizing iPhone 12 mini-adoption.” Flurry wrote in a blog post.
