iPhone 12 might release with under-display ultrasonic fingerprint technology

A new report adds ‘under-display ultrasonic finger print technology’ in the expected hardware features list for the new iPhone 12. A Chinese publication, Economic News Daily, reports that Apple will introduce under-display fingerprint sensor in one of the high-end models of its new flagship iPhone 12 series this year.

Under-Display Ultrasonic Fingerprint sensors

The report details that Apple’s three suppliers are supposedly collaborating on the development of the innovative under-display scanner technology. GIS (touch panel maker), BOE (OLED display maker) and Qualcomm (chips manufacturer) are the mentioned companies which are responsible for working on the ultrasonic fingerprint sensors for 5G iPhone 12 Pro Max.

This report is a revival of EDN’s last year’s report on the possible release of the aforementioned technology in 2020 iPhone line-up. The previous report listed Qualcomm as the manufacturer of the scanners for one of the new flagship variants. Furthermore, other credible sources like Bloomberg, Ming-Chi Kuo and Barclays analysts had previously reported that Apple will incorporate both, under-display fingerprint scanner, and Face ID authentication by 2020-2021.

New iPad Air with Under-Display Touch ID

Besides the new iPhone 12, another upcoming device is rumored to have under-display touch authentication technology. An anonymous Twitter account @L0vetodream tweeted in March about the upcoming iPad Air with under the screen fingerprint authentication technology.

With regards to iPhone 12, the account speculates 5G network support in all four iPhone 12 models: 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch base models, and two 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models. The account corroborates EDN’s claim that Qualcomm is one of the manufactures for components parts.

There are numerous rumors sharing details about the design and specifications of upcoming Apple products, so we are always cautious before believing anything definitively. However, @L0vetodream account handle has been accurate about iPhone SE and Magic Keyboard so far, therefore, we are taking its leaks into consideration. The account reported on the reappearance of Touch ID in the new low cost iPhone SE too.

If true, it will be first time Apple releases an iPhone with under-display fingerprint authentication technology. The technology is rumored to have been in development for years but did not release due to unsatisfactory performance. This is a technology edge which Android users gloat about. Smartphones like Xiaomi Mi 10 pro, Samsung S20 and A50 already support under-display touch authentication.

Hoping that all goes well, and if Apple does not delay the launch of iPhone 12 due to COVID-19 pandemic, we’ll find out in September what the new flagship smartphone will be like.
