This year, Apple has expanded the Apple Watch Always-On display technology to the new iPhone 14 Pro models. With a 1Hz refresh rate, the Always-On feature dims the smartphone’s Lock Screen enough to keep the time, widgets, and Live Activities available at a glance.
Now, that the reviews of the new iPhone 14 Pro are out after the embargo lifted this week, YouTuber @Brian Tong found that the Always-On works with Phone (audio calls), Apple Maps, and Voice memo apps, along with iOS 16 personalized Lock Screen.

As seen in Tong‘s review video, when the smartphone was put to sleep in the Maps app, the iPhone 14 Pro Always-On display blacked out all the details of the Maps app and only displayed the directions, the current and arrival times, and the distance.
In the Voice recording app on the iPhone 14 Pro Always-On display shows all the elements of the UI in dark mode.
When the phone is put to sleep during an audio call, the screen dims down and the callers’ name and their display picture are visible.
The iPhone 14 Pro models already come with improved battery life thanks to the advanced A16 Bionic chip built on a 4nm process for better power efficiency to power the Always-On display which shuts down automatically in different scenarios and only consumes 4% of battery overnight.
Apple’s most highlighted feature for the new iPhone 14 Pro Always-On display is the Dynamic Island which brings a completely new experience of how users interact with their iPhone. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing said:

Today, consumers who pre-ordered the iPhone 14 models will start receiving them and the new lineup also launches in retail stores. With the passage of time, additional information regarding the iPhone 14 functionality with unveiled as more and more people will get their hands on them.
