Jailbreak iOS 4 on iPhone 3GS with old bootloaders

If you’re already using a jailbroken iPhone 3GS with an old bootloader, here’s a guide by Kaatje that lets you jailbreak iOS 4 on your device without upgrading the bootloader. The guide isn’t for novices so don’t dare try it if you don’t know your way around a terminal windows and Pwnagetool. Also, don’t try it if you use a hacktivated iPhone.

You’ll need the following to be able to use this guide (Mac only):

  • iPhone 3GS (with older bootroom, aka can be jb without tethering)
  • iTunes 9.2
  • iPhone is currently jailbroken
  • You have the original carrier sim (hactivation is not yet functional)

Download the following:

  • Download Pwnagetool 3.1.5 from here
  • Download redsn0w 0.9.5 from here
  • Download firmware bundle from here

The guide is quiet lengthy, you can follow the rest of it on Kaatje’s website.

iOS 4 was released to the public today and already ultrasn0w has been updated to unlock basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 5.13.04! The jailbreak tool for iOS 4 isn’t out yet but we have a guide up for those stuck on locked iPhone 3G/3GS with iPhone OS 3.1.3. Geohot is also working on an exploit for iPhone 4 which should be out around the date when iPhone 4 is launched.
