At the annual WWDC event, Apple has announced a new dynamic sound system for AirPods Pro with the new iOS 14 update. They will now feature spatial audio, AirPods Pro Motion API, headphones accommodations, automatic device switching, and battery notifications. Automatic device switching and battery notifications will also be available for first and second-generation AirPods.

All of the new features are designed to deliver a theater-like surround sound experience. AirPods Pro deliver Immersive Sound Experience

The latest iOS 14 software update supports audio enhancement technology to improve user experience when using Apple’s high-end wireless earbuds. We have listed down the new technology released for the AirPods Pro.

Spatial Audio

The new spatial audio system enables AirPods Pro deliver an immersive surround sound experience by using directional audio filters to create a movie theater-like effect with sound from all directions. The new technology uses accelerometer and gyroscope in iPhone and AirPods Pro to re-direct sound fields by tracking users’ head motions and the smartphone’s movements; the devices automatically compare motion data to “remap” sound fields to always keep the immersive sounds in sync.

Headphone Accommodations

With this new accessibility feature, Apple has equipped the wireless earbuds to enhance the soft sounds and to adjust certain frequencies for a more clear audio experience when on call, watching a movie and listening to music or podcasts. The Headphone Accommodation technology works with the existing Transparency mode to actively amplify low frequency sounds and tuning surrounding sounds to users’ needs.

Automatic device switching

For seamless connectivity of earbuds with any of Apple devices, the new iOS 14 supports automatic device switching capability in AirPods Pro. Signed-in to the same iCloud account on all devices, the earbuds will automatically switch between users’ iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.

Battery notifications

Now users will receive battery notifications to remind them to charge the AirPods before using them for a call, listening to music or watching a movie. This feature will be very helpful to notify the user to power up the device when leaving the house because it is easy to forgot to put the case on charging.

AirPods Pro Motion API

For developers, the Motion API provides data of orientations, rotational rates and user acceleration of better design and develop applications which require movements like gaming and fitness apps.

Since there launch in 2016, AirPods have been a very successful addition to Apple’s products line-up. Updated in 2019, the second generation AirPods and an advance model, AirPods Pro have increased sales of the company’s wearable by an impressive percentage. It was reported that over a 100 millions units have been sold globally and inherently captured 60% of the wireless earbuds global market share.

Now for $249, users get immersive sound experience, active noise cancellation, transparency mode, and automatic device switching for AirPods Pro.
