YouTube’s picture-in-picture feature is broken on both iOS and Android, and the company has made no progress fixing it since discovering the issue on Friday morning, July 18. When users close the YouTube app expecting a floating video window to appear, nothing happens, the app just continues playing audio in the background instead.
The outage began Friday and persists into Saturday afternoon. YouTube says “teams are actively investigating,” but has not provided a timeline for resolution or acknowledged the issue publicly. 9to5Google first reported the bug and was able to replicate it on iPhone running YouTube version 21.28, though the issue does not appear on their Android Pixel device.
The vast majority of reports are coming from iOS users. While some Android devices are affected, Apple’s system is bearing the brunt of what appears to be a platform-specific regression or a much wider failure on that side. Google has not disclosed exact numbers. The core issue is simple, when PiP fails to trigger, the video stops displaying entirely and only audio playback continues, defeating the entire purpose of the feature.
YouTube only rolled out free picture-in-picture globally in April 2026. Free users who were just beginning to rely on PiP as a reason to keep YouTube active now have no reason to keep the app open when they want to switch to another task. Premium subscribers, who paid partly for PiP reliability, are getting the same broken experience as free users, making the paid subscription feel less valuable at a moment when it should feel most solid.
YouTube has not posted meaningful updates on the YouTube Help forum where users typically track official progress on outages. The lack of transparency is frustrating given the scope of the problem. Until Google ships an update, there is no workaround.
