The iPhone Duo fold animation can stop playing when Reduce Motion or Reduce Transparency is turned on. The screen then fades as you open or close the phone instead of animating, and turning off the right switch brings the animation back.
Owners have reported the missing animation since launch, and the fixes below come from what they found worked, not from an Apple support page. The phone is built so content can react as it folds, with a new display engine driving the inner and outer displays at the same time. The fix sits in Accessibility, where two switches override that behavior.
Turning off Reduce Motion brings back the iPhone Duo fold animation
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then tap Motion.
- Turn off Reduce Motion.
Fold and unfold the phone once to test it. With Reduce Motion on, iOS uses a dissolve instead of zoom and slide effects, so the screen fades where the fold animation would play.
Reduce Motion is meant for people who are sensitive to screen movement, so leaving it on trades the fold animation for calmer transitions. It was already off for some owners who still saw the fade, which makes the next setting worth checking even when this one is clear.
Reduce Transparency is the second switch to check when the fade stays
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then tap Display & Text Size.
- Turn off Reduce Transparency.
Reduce Transparency cuts the blur and transparency on some backgrounds across iOS. Some owners report that the fold animation returned as soon as it was off. Test the phone after each switch so you know which one was responsible, and if the first one fixes it, you can leave the other alone.
What to do if the iPhone Duo fold animation still does not play
Not every owner gets the animation back, and the cause is not always a single setting, since one owner turned Reduce Motion off and still saw no animation. Check both switches together, fold the phone fully shut and open it again, and note whether the fade happens on the inner display, the outer display or both.
If the animation is still missing with both switches off, take the phone to Apple Support or an Apple Store with that note. After the first week with a new device, it is also worth running through our iPhone Duo settings guide, since a few of them touch the same accessibility options.
The Liquid Glass slider handles readability without Reduce Transparency
If you turned on Reduce Transparency to make menus and buttons easier to read, the Liquid Glass slider is the setting to use instead. Open Settings > Appearance > Liquid Glass and drag the slider toward tinted, which turns buttons and search bars opaque.
Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast both disable the slider while they are on, so turn them off before you move it.
