iPhone Duo Gets an Open or Close Automation in iOS 27.2

iOS 27.2 adds an iPhone Duo open or close automation to Shortcuts. The trigger, named “When my iPhone is opened or closed,” runs a shortcut when you unfold the phone or fold it shut. It is not the only Shortcuts feature and change in the update that shipped on October 26.

The update also adjusts the Workout and App automations, extends Use Model web lookups to more languages and adds editor controls on the Mac, iPhone and iPad. The changes ship in the 27.2 updates for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and visionOS, and several are limited to specific platforms.

The iPhone Duo Open or Close Automation Makes Folding a Shortcut Trigger

The trigger is a new automation built for the iPhone Duo, so the foldable’s open and closed states become events a shortcut can react to. Apps already use those states. Fold Focus starts a Pomodoro session when you close the iPhone Duo and knocks a building down if you open it early.

In iOS 27 every automation is stored as a shortcut that begins with its triggers, and automations now sync between devices. The new trigger sits in that same structure, so building one works like building any other automation. You pick the trigger and add the actions.

It is also the fourth new automation since iOS 27 launched. iOS 27 added automations for notifications, a connected keyboard and screenshots.

The Workout and App Automations Pick Up Small Upgrades

The Workout automation, which runs when you start a workout, now supports the Fitness app on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The App automation, such as one set to “When Weather is opened or closed,” can now provide the name of the app that was closed on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Use Model Reaches More Languages and the Editor Gets New Controls

Use Model, the Apple Intelligence action in Shortcuts, can now get up-to-date information from the web in additional languages. Apple Intelligence needs Siri and the device language set to one of 16 supported languages, including English, Spanish, Japanese and Turkish.

The AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts are among the server-side Apple Intelligence features with daily usage limits, and Apple has said expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. The limits vary by feature, request complexity and system demand.

On the Mac, the Shortcuts editor’s window layout can now be set from the Show Actions and Show Describe a Shortcut menu items. On iPhone and iPad, you can edit a shortcut’s name and icon directly from the library.
