Apple has released iOS 27.1, and the update is limited to the iPhone Duo. Every other iPhone stays on iOS 27.0.1 until iOS 27.2 arrives.
Apple’s security releases page lists iOS 27.1 for the iPhone Duo only, with today’s release date, the same day the foldable went on sale. The entry says the update has no published CVE entries, so Apple has listed no security fixes in this release.
The iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1 installed and still asks buyers to install a newer build during setup. Keep a Wi-Fi connection handy for that step.
No other iPhone has received iOS 27.1
Apple never released an iOS 27.1 beta. Developer testing went from iOS 27 straight to iOS 27.2 beta 1 on September 16, which left iOS 27.1 as a version reserved for the foldable. Apple’s iPhone Duo announcement said the phone is available with iOS 27.1 and named no other device.
For everyone else, iOS 27.0.1 from September 28 remains the latest version on Apple’s list. It supports the iPhone 11 and later, and it also carries no published CVE entries.
iPhone owners should expect iOS 27.2 before the end of October
Apple seeded the iOS 27.2 release candidate to developers on October 19, which is normally the last build before the public release. Apple has not announced a date. It did promise Siri AI in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish for October, and iOS 27.2 is the update that carries those languages.
HomePod mini 2 ships on October 30 and runs HomePod software 27.2, so the matching iPhone update is expected to be out by then.
iPhone Duo owners will want iOS 27.2 as well
Apple said in September that the iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year. Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach said that Apple Pencil support is working on the iOS 27.2 release candidate, though Apple has not confirmed which update carries it.
A backup from a newer version of iOS generally cannot be restored onto a device running an older one. Anyone moving to the iPhone Duo from an iPhone running an iOS 27.2 beta should think twice before installing the beta on the old phone first. Checking for updates on the new phone takes three steps:
- Open Settings, then General, then Software Update.
- Install the newest iOS 27.1 build if one is offered.
- Check again once iOS 27.2 goes public.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US and is on sale today in more than 70 countries and regions, with 28 more following on October 30.
