Apple AirPods 5 bring active noise cancellation to Apple’s base earbud line for the first time, changing what you get for $129. The previous generation, Apple AirPods 4, locked ANC behind a $179 variant, and the standard model had none at all.
That gap closes with this launch, and Amazon already has the base model listed at $124.99 ahead of Friday’s in-store release.
Active Noise Cancellation Gets a Real Boost Over the Last Generation
Apple says Apple AirPods 5 reduce external noise up to 1.5 times more effectively than Apple AirPods 4 with ANC. For an open-ear design that doesn’t seal your ear canal, that’s a meaningful jump.
Open-ear buds have always traded isolation for comfort. Closing that gap makes them a real option for commutes or offices, not just workouts and quick errands.
Siri AI and Live Translation Cover Ten Languages at Launch
Apple AirPods 5 are built around Apple Intelligence, specifically Siri AI and Live Translation. Siri on Apple AirPods 5 handles open-ended questions, brainstorming, and full conversations, pulling personal context from your messages, emails, and photos.
Live Translation supports real-time two-way translation through the earbuds when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. At launch, it covers:
- Mandarin (Simplified and Traditional)
- English (UK and US)
- French
- German
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Portuguese (Brazil)
- Spanish
Sound Quality Moves Closer to the Pro Line
Apple AirPods 5 pair a redesigned multiport acoustic architecture with next-generation Adaptive EQ. Apple says this delivers richer, more detailed audio across a wider range of ear shapes.
Voice Isolation uses computational audio to strip background noise and clarify your voice on calls in loud environments. Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking creates a theater-like effect for music, video, and games, matching the feature on Apple AirPods Pro.
Adaptive Audio Switches Modes So You Don’t Have To
Adaptive Audio blends noise cancellation and Transparency mode automatically based on your surroundings, cutting out manual mode switching. Conversation Awareness detects when you start talking and lowers playback volume, so you don’t need to raise your voice.
Battery Life Reaches Five Hours With ANC Turned On
The base model delivers five hours of playback with ANC on, one hour longer than Apple AirPods 4 with ANC, thanks to a redesigned battery. That covers most full workdays without a case charge.
Here’s how the two variants compare:
| Feature | $129 Model | $149 Model |
|---|---|---|
| Active Noise Cancellation | Yes | Yes |
| Battery life with ANC | 5 hours | 5 hours |
| Charging case | Standard | Wireless (Apple Watch charger, Qi, USB-C) |
| Force sensor volume control | No | Yes |
Siri AI Still Needs iOS 27 and a Supported Device
Siri AI and Live Translation require iOS 27 on an Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language. Apple Intelligence became available on September 14, 2026, though Siri AI remains in beta and may require a waitlist signup depending on your region.
Older iPhones and older iOS versions lose the AI features but keep ANC, the sound quality upgrades, and the water resistance rating.
Our Take
I think $124.99 is the number that matters here. ANC, computational audio, and spatial sound were Pro-tier features two years ago, and now they’re standard at the entry price. If you’ve been holding off on Apple AirPods Pro because of cost, this closes most of that gap for $50 less.
Build Quality Holds Up to Daily Use
Apple AirPods 5 carry an IP57 rating for dust, sweat, and water resistance, so rain and heavy workouts won’t damage them. Apple built the earbuds with 40 percent recycled material overall, including 70 percent recycled plastic in the charging case and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery.
