iOS 27 shipped this week with a full overhaul of Apple Intelligence, and Apple managed to keep most of it running within the same storage footprint as before. A handful of newer iPhones are the exception, and they need almost double the free space.
According to Apple’s support documentation, most iPhone models still only need 8GB of free storage to run every Apple Intelligence feature in iOS 27. A specific group of newer models needs up to 14GB instead.
Which iPhones Need the Extra Storage
The higher 14GB requirement applies to five models:
- iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
- iPhone Duo
- iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max
- iPhone Air
Every other supported iPhone, including the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, stays at the same 8GB requirement iOS 26 already used.
Why These Models Need More Room
The five higher-tier models support two Apple Intelligence features that aren’t available anywhere else in the lineup. One is Siri AI voice customization, which adjusts expressivity and pace. The other is a more accurate version of on-device dictation. Both features run on a larger, more capable on-device model, and that model needs the extra storage to sit on the phone alongside everything else.
This connects to something we reported back in July, when it emerged that the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e would miss these same two features because of a RAM limitation. The storage requirement announced this week is the other half of that story. The devices with enough RAM to run the bigger model also need more free market to store it.
Our Take
Anyone on one of these five models who has been ignoring those storage warnings for months should probably stop putting it off. Going from 8GB to 14GB doesn’t sound dramatic on a phone with 256GB or more, but it becomes a real problem on entry-level storage tiers where market is already tight from photos, apps, and iOS itself. Apple drawing this line by RAM and storage together, rather than by iPhone generation alone, is also the more honest way to handle it. It ties the feature to what the hardware can do instead of pretending every recent iPhone is equally capable.
