Apple has sent Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers a memo on iPhone Duo display cracking that tells technicians how to diagnose and address it. The instructions are routine, with technicians told to inspect an affected unit and repair or replace it under standard procedures.
MacRumors obtained the memo and reported it today, along with Apple’s position that there is no recall.
iPhone Duo Display Cracking Gets a Standard Repair, Not a Program
Apple told technicians the same thing it said publicly on October 26, that the inner display issue affects a small number of units, and that statement told owners who see the problem to contact AppleCare for a replacement. Apple has also said most units are not susceptible and that affected ones appear to show the defect rather quickly after use.
Apple has not recalled the iPhone Duo and has not opened a public service program for the display, so a cracked unit goes through the usual repair or replacement route. Owners can book through Apple’s support site or call 1-800-APL-CARE in the United States and Canada, using these repair booking steps. Without AppleCare+, Apple’s estimated repair fees are $49 for the cover layer and $999 for the inner display, which drop to $19 and $99 with coverage.
Teardowns Point to the Hinge, but the Cause Is Unconfirmed
Apple has not said what causes the cracks. In its iPhone Duo teardown, iFixit found the breaks cluster near the transition from the flex cable gap to the central hinge support, and its simulation suggests the center support bar may fail to drop far enough, leaving a stress hotspot where the folded screen lands.
Owners have reported cracks and bright lines along the fold within hours of unboxing, including one who saw damage within six hours of buying the phone. The damage is probably smaller than it looks, since a localized fault in the display’s tiny electrical connections can take out a whole row or column of pixels. Separately, iFixit’s fluorescent powder test found enough fine dust reached the hinge to make it crunch, though less than in its Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold tests.
iFixit gives the iPhone Duo a provisional 5 out of 10 for repairability, the highest it has scored a foldable, and says the inner display and hinge account for the biggest deduction. Replacing the inner display costs about half the $1,999 starting price of a new iPhone Duo, which is why iFixit says many owners are opting for AppleCare+.
