Apple-owned Dark Sky shuts down Android app

Apple acquired Dark Sky, a popular weather forecasting app, in March for an undisclosed amount. Initially, the Android app was supposed to shut down on July 1st, 2020. But in a swift last-minute change, the company announced that it was extending the shutdown deadline by a month. However, on August 1, Apple discontinued the weather forecasting app on Android and Wear OS devices.

Dark Sky Weather is a monthly subscription service which provides minute-by-minute weather coverage. The app offers beautiful weather animations, push notifications, today widget, and time machine features.

Android users, who still have the app installed, got a notification in the app informing them of the shutdown. Efforts to search based on location now offers no proper results at all. All information is set to a fruitless default, such as the time for sunrise and sunset are set as 12 AM and temperatures are set at 0 across the board on the Android app.

Weather forecasts and maps on the Dark Sky website are still active at the moment after an extension for an unspecified amount of time, but embedded material no longer seems to be an option.

Additionally, the Google Play Store listing for the app no longer works and was taken down beforehand to stop any new users from signing up for the service.

Android users, who had subscribed to the $2.99/per-year plan before the shutdown, have been promised a “full refund” by the developer. The Play Store notified subscribers of the service cancellation via email.

“Your Dark Sky – Hyperlocal Weather subscription from The Dark Sky Company, LLC on Google Play has been canceled.”

Third-party apps using Dark Sky’s API service have until the end of 2021 to move to other services. However, the company is no longer accepting new sign-ups.

Dark Sky app in iOS

The iOS version of Dark Sky will remain unchanged for the time being and is still available to be purchased through the App Store for $3.99. However, the Weather app in iOS 14 has already been updated to incorporate some elements from Dark Sky’s API. For example, a new next-hour forecast and widgets that display expected weather for the following hour.

Dark Sky Weather can be downloaded from the App Store. It is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple Watch and requires iOS 11 or later and watchOS 4 or later.
