Apple to launch first iPad Pro with mini-LED display in Q1 2021 – Report

Apple’s plans to transition its iPad Pro display to mini LED display has been the subject of many leaks and rumors in last year. Recently, a report from the Korean news outlet ET News has further solidified the rumor that the first iPad Pro with mini-LED display technology is expected to launch in Q1 of 2021.

The report, highlighted by Patently Apple, claims that LG will likely begin mass production of the displays at the end of this year. Mini-LED display technology offers higher brightness and deeper contrasts. Currently, the LCD panels used by the tech giant use light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to light up the display.

ET News says that LG Display will provide the mini-LED displays to the tech giant and that Apple will “actively use” the screen technology starting with the iPad Pro lineup in early 2021, followed by the MacBook and iMac in the future:

“LG Display is preparing to supply its Mini LED backlight LCDs to Apple. Its new display uses a small LED as the backlight and has improved performance in brightness and contrast ratio. Because it is reported that Apple will look to actively use Mini Led LCDs starting with iPads early next year and other products such as MacBook and iMac, there are expected to be changes in the global LCD market and to LCD technology.”

Mini-LEDs are smaller diodes that are less than 0.2mm in size. It is rumored that the brightness of this display can go up to 4000 nits as compared to the 625 nits of brightness that Apple’s current flagship iPhone 11. Additionally, enabling HDR through local dimming is another advantage of Mini-LED displays.

This week’s report corroborates previous supply chain reporting that suggested LG would be a supplier of mini-LED screens for Apple. Notable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also previously predicted that the iPad Pro would be the first Apple product to make the switch to mini-LED displays, and the transition will most likely start with the 12.9-inch model.

Furthermore, back in June, leaker @L0vetodream said that the Cupertino tech giant was planning to launch new iPad Pro models with an A14X chip, 5G, and a Mini-LED display in the first half of 2021.
