iOS 16.4 and tvOS 16.4 add new “Dim Flashing Lights” accessibility feature

As Apple prioritizes Accessibility, it is built into all of its devices. The latest iOS 16.4, iPadOS 16.4 and tvOS 16.4 updates have introduced a new accessibility feature called “Dim Flashing Lights” for users who suffer from epilepsy.

Apple accessibility - iOS 16.4

Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder in which abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes recurrent seizures. People suffering from photosensitive epilepsy have seizures that are triggered by flashing lights, bold/contrasting visual patterns, or overexposure to video games.

Although there is no cure for photosensitive epilepsy, the occurrence of seizures can be reduced by avoiding stimuli that trigger them.

Epileptic users can dim flashing or strobing lights in videos in iOS 16.4 and tvOS 16.4

In iOS 16.4 and tvOS 16.4, users with photosensitive epilepsy can enable the “Dim Flashing Lights” feature so that repeated flashing or strobing lights are dimmed automatically and the playback timeline indicates when flashing lights occur for supported media.

Your Apple TV uses an on-device algorithm to detect flashing or strobing lights included in supported video content and automatically dims them on your TV in real-time. Motion settings should not be relied upon in circumstances where you could be harmed or injured, in high-risk situations, or for the treatment of any medical condition.

Users can also turn off the automatic playback of video previews in case they feature flashing or strobing lights.
