A new glitch in iOS 27 is making the rounds online, and it can lock up your iPhone screen with nothing more than two quick swipes. The bug does not damage the phone in any way, but it looks alarming enough that people are already using it as a prank on friends and family.
The soft-lock was first detailed by Benjamin Mayo at 9to5Mac, who was able to reproduce it consistently on an iPhone Air running iOS 27.0. Software glitches like this have shown up in past versions of iOS before, and Apple typically patches them within a release or two.
A Specific Swipe Sequence Locks the Home Screen
The trigger is simple enough that anyone can try it by accident. Here is the exact sequence that causes the freeze:
- Go to the Home Screen on an iPhone running iOS 27
- Pull down from the top-left corner to start opening Notification Center
- Immediately pull down from the top-right corner to open Control Center, before Notification Center finishes sliding into view
- Dismiss Control Center and check whether the phone has locked up
Once the bug triggers, the Camera and Torch buttons on the Lock Screen get stuck at the top of the display. Swiping between Home Screens stops working, and taps inside apps no longer register properly. Even holding the side button to bring up the slide to power off screen fails, since the slider stops responding to touch.
Force Restarting the iPhone Clears the Glitch
The fix does not require a factory reset or a trip to Apple Support. A standard force restart clears the freeze every time. To force restart an iPhone, press the volume up button once, press the volume down button once, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
The phone reboots normally after that and returns to full working order, with no data loss or lasting damage. Mayo noted that the bug can take a couple of attempts to trigger since the window for pulling off the second swipe is short.
Apple has already pushed out a beta for iOS 27.2, but the glitch has not been patched yet. Mayo confirmed the freeze still occurs on that beta build, meaning the fix has not landed even in Apple’s own internal testing branch as of this week.
