Apple appears to be preparing a new Edge Light feature for the iPhone Duo, with code in the iOS 27 Release Candidate pointing to support for the company’s first foldable iPhone.
The feature is designed to use the edges of the display for visual effects, potentially providing a new way to surface notifications or other information without relying entirely on the main interface.
iOS 27 RC Points To iPhone Duo Support
References to Edge Light were discovered in the iOS 27 RC, but the feature is currently gated behind a device subtype that appears to correspond to the iPhone Duo.
This suggests Apple is developing Edge Light specifically for the foldable iPhone rather than making it available across the existing iPhone lineup. The device subtype also provides another indication of how Apple is separating Duo-specific features within iOS 27.
The discovery comes just before the iPhone Duo’s launch, suggesting Edge Light could be one of the software features Apple has not fully detailed yet.
The Feature Is Not Fully Finished
The current implementation also appears to be incomplete. A color temperature setting is present, but it does not appear to be fully implemented in the iOS 27 RC.
That could mean Apple is still working on how Edge Light behaves and looks before the feature reaches users. Apple could also enable additional controls in a future software update.
The unfinished color temperature option suggests Edge Light may offer some degree of customization rather than being limited to a single lighting effect.
Edge Light Could Be A Duo-Exclusive Feature
The iPhone Duo has a large inner display that folds around a central hinge, giving Apple more room to experiment with visual effects around the edges of the screen.
Apple has not officially detailed Edge Light, so its exact purpose and behavior remain unclear. However, the iOS 27 RC reference provides evidence that the feature is being developed for the new foldable hardware.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and is scheduled to arrive on October 23, with pre-orders beginning October 16.
