Apple keeps the iPhone 11 alive with iOS 27 support

If you were expecting Apple to drop support for the iPhone 11 with iOS 27, think again. Despite first launching in 2019, Apple’s popular iPhone 11 lineup is getting another major software update, making iOS 27 one of the most widely supported iPhone releases in recent years.

Even more surprising, Apple hasn’t removed a single iPhone from its compatibility list this year. Every device that supports iOS 26 can also install iOS 27, giving millions of users another year of new features, security updates, bug fixes, and design improvements without needing to upgrade their hardware.

iOS 27 supported iPhones

Apple didn’t cut any iPhones from iOS 27

For the second year in a row, Apple has chosen to keep its entire iOS compatibility list intact.

That means iPhone owners who were worried about losing support can breathe a sigh of relief. Devices dating back to 2019 remain eligible for Apple’s latest software update, continuing the company’s long-standing reputation for delivering years of software support.

While many smartphone makers stop major updates after a few years, Apple is extending support for some devices well beyond that timeframe.

Apple says iOS 27 is compatible with the following iPhone models:

  • iPhone 17e
  • iPhone 17
  • iPhone Air
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max

  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro

If your iPhone currently runs iOS 26, it will also support iOS 27 when the update launches later this year.

Why the iPhone 11 surviving another year matters

The iPhone 11 launched nearly seven years ago, yet Apple continues to support it with major operating system updates.

While the device won’t get every headline feature announced at WWDC 2026, continued software support still delivers significant benefits. Users gain access to security updates, bug fixes, app compatibility improvements, interface changes, and many new iOS features.

For families, students, and budget-conscious users, the extended lifespan of the iPhone 11 also means there’s less pressure to upgrade to newer hardware.

It’s another example of how Apple’s long-term software support helps older devices remain useful years after release.

Not every iOS 27 feature will work on every iPhone

Although iOS 27 supports all of the devices listed above, some features require newer hardware.

Apple Intelligence features continue to have stricter hardware requirements because they rely on advanced on-device AI models and larger memory configurations.

That means features such as Siri AI, advanced Apple Intelligence experiences, and some AI-powered capabilities remain limited to newer devices, including supported iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, and upcoming iPhone 17 models.

Older devices will still receive the core iOS 27 update, but the complete Apple Intelligence experience won’t be available on every supported iPhone.

Which iPhones don’t support iOS 27?

If your iPhone is older than the devices on Apple’s compatibility list, it won’t be able to install iOS 27.

Unsupported devices include:

  • iPhone X
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7 lineup
  • iPhone SE (1st generation)
  • Older iPhone models

These devices will continue to function normally, but they won’t receive the latest iOS features when iOS 27 launches.

When will iOS 27 be released?

Apple has already released the first iOS 27 developer beta following its WWDC 2026 announcement.

A public beta is expected to launch next month, allowing users to test the software before its official release. The final version of iOS 27 is expected to roll out this fall alongside Apple’s latest iPhone lineup.

As with previous releases, Apple will continue refining the software throughout the beta period before making it available to everyone.

Should you install the iOS 27 beta?

For most users, the answer is no, at least not yet.

Developer betas often contain bugs, performance issues, battery drain, and app compatibility problems. While public betas are generally more stable, they can still introduce unexpected issues.

If your iPhone is your primary device, waiting for the final release is usually the safest option.
