Apple is reportedly adding a personal touch to the first boot of the iPhone Duo. Apple retail stores will have a way to customize the startup screen so it greets the buyer by name.
Mark Gurman shared the detail on X on October 10, 2026. Software watcher pdfu then posted a breakdown of how the greeting appears to work in iOS 27.
Apple Stores Will Put the Buyer’s Name on the iPhone Duo Boot Screen
Gurman says Apple retail stores will have a system that customizes the boot of the device with the buyer’s name. His example is a screen that says “Hello, Mark” when the phone turns on for the first time.
Fun little touch for the iPhone Duo launch: Apple retail stores will have a system to customize the boot of the device with the buyer’s name so it says “Hello, Mark” (for example) when it turns on for the first time. (US only, Duo only, English and Spanish).

Apple is applying tight limits to the feature as it will be limited to just Apple retail stores in the US for English and Spanish languages.
Counterpoint expects Apple to sell 6 million iPhone Duo units in 2026. Anyone planning to pick one up in a store can also check our iPhone Duo trade-in value guide before heading in.
pdfu Says the Greeting Runs on the Same Infrastructure as Software Updates
pdfu called it a very cool use of the in-box updater and wants to see whether Apple expands the program. According to pdfu, the new renderer already knows “Hello” in 49 languages.
pdfu also says Apple added a font called Macintosh Skeletal in iOS 27 for this feature. A few more details from pdfu’s follow-up post:
- The same in-box infrastructure is used for software updates.
- The non-personalized Hello uses pre-drawn paths instead of the new font.
- The personalized Hello does not cycle through languages.
- The name starts on its own line, and both lines scale together.
- The font mostly covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic glyphs. Other scripts mostly include the characters needed for “Hello” and “Welcome.”
Other tidbits:
• The same in-box infrastructure is used for software updates.
• The non-personalized Hello uses pre-drawn paths, not the new font.
• The personalized Hello doesn’t cycle through languages.

The Macintosh Skeletal Font First Showed Up in iOS 27 Beta 1 in June
Steve Moser spotted the font in the Setup Assistant of iOS 27 Beta 1 and wondered whether it was used for the cursive hello intro. He posted that on June 9, 2026, four months before Gurman’s report.
Our Take
I love this detail. A phone that says Hello with your name the moment you open the box is the kind of detail Apple does well, and the Macintosh in the font name makes me think Apple is leaning on its own history here.
The iPhone Duo software story keeps growing, from the Focus toggle on the Lock Screen to the two-page Quick Look layout in the open book position. A personalized first boot adds one more reason to buy it in a store.
