An iPhone Duo screen protector that is bubbling or peeling can be one of two very different things. A third-party film that you applied yourself is easy to remove and replace, while the matte cover layer Apple fits over the inner display is part of the phone and should not be peeled.
The phone has a nano-textured cover layer over its 7.6-inch inner display, and Apple confirmed that the layer can be replaced on its own, so work out which layer is lifting before you touch anything.
A Rigid iPhone Duo Screen Protector Cannot Follow the Inner Display
The inner display bends every time the phone folds, so a rigid protector cannot follow it. A screen protector makes the most sense on the outer display, which is rigid Ceramic Shield 2 glass and does not flex.
If you want a replacement, pick one from the best iPhone Duo screen protectors and match it to the right display.
Remove a Lifting Film and Reapply or Replace It
- Turn the iPhone Duo off and keep it closed in a dust-free room.
- Peel the film slowly from a corner, pulling it back at a low angle rather than lifting it straight up.
- Wipe the display with a soft, lint-free cloth and confirm that no dust or lint is left on it.
- Apply a new film following the maker’s instructions, or leave the inner display bare if it will not stay flat at the crease.
- If touch behaves strangely on either display, remove the protector and test the phone bare.
Do not use bleach, window cleaner, household cleaners, aerosol sprays or solvents on the display. On the inner display, stay with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and light pressure, and keep keys and coins out of the same pocket, since the cover layer scratches at level 2 on the Mohs scale.
Leave the Factory Cover Layer Alone and Book Service if It Lifts
If the edge of the matte layer itself is lifting, do not peel it, because a durability tester who removed the layer saw brighter colors but returned glare and did not recommend it.
Book a visit with Apple instead, because the cover layer is designed to be replaced and Apple charges $49 for it without AppleCare+ and $19 with it. If the display underneath is damaged too, the steps for a cracked iPhone Duo display and the iPhone Duo repair fees apply.
Repairs outside Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider are not covered by the warranty or AppleCare plans, so a replacement cover layer is a job for a service provider.
