iPhone users report iOS 14.7 beta 2 causing ‘SIM Failure’ after updating

Some iPhone users recently took to social media to report that they were met with an unfortunate ‘SIM Failure’ error after updating to the second iOS 14.7 developer beta. This error rendered their devices quite useless, and it seems to be limited to eSIM. But if it happens then the user can not make or receive any calls or use cellular data.

Apple released the second beta builds for iOS 14.7, iPadOS 14.7, macOS Big Sur 11.5, tvOS 14.7, and watchOS 7.6 to developers. The updates most contain under-the-hood bug fixes and performance improvements and likely security fixes that have not been disclosed yet.

iPhone users report a ‘SIM Failure’ error while updating to the 2nd beta of iOS 14.7

The issue was first reported by 9to5Mac, iOS 14.7 beta 2 comes with many bugs and the most annoying part is that users can not fix the problem by themselves.

Based on a few reports on Twitter and also others shared directly with 9to5Mac, there seems to be a widespread bug in the second beta release of iOS 14.7 that results in a “SIM Failure” message right after installing the update.

In addition to the error message, users are unable to make or receive calls or use cellular data on their iPhone after the update. At least based on the reports we have received, the bug seems to mainly affect iPhone users with eSIM instead of regular SIM.

Why and how this problem is taking place is still not clear. For any users running the first beta release of iOS 14.7 on their iPhone, they should skip the second beta release until the Cupertino tech giant releases another update, which will hopefully fix this problem.

iOS 14.7 beta can be downloaded over the air for iPhone, iPod, and iPod touch if you already have a developer profile installed. Alternatively, the IPSW files can be downloaded from Apple Developer Center. Apple has not shared any release notes so far.
