DexFold is a free, unofficial Pokédex app built around the fold of the iPhone Duo, where the outer display becomes a red lid and unfolding the phone opens the Dex across both halves. It runs on any iPhone with iOS 18 or later, so a foldable is optional.
Developer Hernan Rosario released it on the App Store on October 15, and version 1.1 added camera scanning on October 20. Every one of the 1,025 entries is read aloud, and a one-time $2.99 purchase adds catch tracking.
DexFold for iPhone Duo opens across both halves and folds halfway for stats
Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display shows the red lid, with the blue lens drawn around the camera. Unfold the phone and the Dex powers on across both screens, with the sprite screen on one half and the keypad and description on the other, split at the fold. The lens flashes with each word as the entry is read aloud.
Fold the iPhone Duo partway and a data screen sweeps open with base stats, abilities, moves, evolutions and how each one happens, plus type matchups. Opening it flat brings the keypad back. The foldable is built for several poses such as book, tent and seated, and DexFold ties its data screen to the half fold.
Other iPhones get the same Dex without the hinge. Tapping the lid opens it with both halves stacked on one screen, turning the phone sideways puts them side by side, and tapping the description brings up the data screen.
Scan identifies a toy or card and opens its entry
Tapping the blue lens starts Scan, and there is no shutter button. Aim at a toy, a drawing or a card and DexFold recognizes the creature, says its name and category and reads the entry. Recognition runs on the iPhone, and the developer says camera images are never saved or sent. On the iPhone Duo, the outer screen lights up while it scans.
Version 1.1 also added Italian, including the voice, and clues for the Who Is It quiz, where each tap of the speaker gives a new hint, from the entry to height, weight and type. Every entry now shows which region and game it comes from.
DexFold is free, with a one-time $2.99 Plus upgrade
The free version covers all 1,025 entries with the talking voice, stats, abilities, moves, evolutions, type matchups and the silhouette quiz, in English, Spanish and Italian with metric or imperial units. DexFold Plus costs $2.99 once with no subscription.
Plus adds catch tracking for 37 regional Dexes, a trophy for each Dex you complete, a team of six that shows shared weaknesses and resistances, where to find each creature, seven case colors, extra voices and iCloud sync. Optional tips of $0.99 and $2.99 unlock nothing.
Rosario runs IntraPixel, a one-person studio, and also makes FleetFold, a naval grid game released October 14 that puts the target grid on one half of the iPhone Duo and your fleet on the other. DexFold joins other iPhone Duo apps that use the hinge as a control, such as Orisuji, a paper maze game you solve by folding the phone, and Deck-Man, a cassette player that starts playback when you close it.
DexFold has no tie to Nintendo, The Pokémon Company or Game Freak, and its entry data comes from the open PokéAPI project. The developer says it has no ads or accounts and collects no data. It is a 69.7 MB download that requires iOS 18 or later, and the entries work offline, with only the sprite images downloading the first time you see each one.
