Notability Adds a Two-Pane Library for iPhone Duo

Notability now supports the iPhone Duo, as per the latest update from Ginger Labs. When you unfold the phone, the library expands into two panes on the 7.6-inch inner display.

Notability reflows handwriting, typed notes, audio and PDFs as the screen changes size, so your notes keep up when you open and close the phone. Handwriting on the iPhone Duo needs iOS 27.2 and an Apple Pencil with USB-C, so update first if your phone still runs the iOS 27.1 it shipped with.

Notability splits its library into two panes on the iPhone Duo

The iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display when it is closed and a 7.6-inch inner display when it is open. Apple gave both displays the same aspect ratio, so content scales proportionally when you fold or unfold the phone.

Notability uses the extra room on the inner display to show the library in two panes, so you can see more of your notes at once. The app is the top pick for students in our ranking of the best note-taking apps for iPhone, and a two-pane library gives students more of their notes to browse at a glance.

Apple Pencil handwriting needs iOS 27.2 on the iPhone Duo

Apple Pencil with USB-C support reached the iPhone Duo in iOS 27.2, which Apple released on October 26. Apple Pencil input works on both the inner and outer displays, and you need to update before you can handwrite notes because the iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1.

The Apple Pencil with USB-C is the only Pencil that works with the iPhone Duo, and it does not support hover on the phone. The Apple Pencil Pro does not work either. The box holds only the phone and a 1-meter USB-C cable, so you buy the Pencil separately.

The controls in Notability stay clear of the camera strip, so nothing you need ends up hidden under it. According to the company, Notability will move to Apple’s native iOS 27 interface, with layouts designed to keep your notes off the fold. On the iPhone Duo, iOS 27 puts Lock Screen controls, the Dock and app navigation along the side of the screen to free up vertical space for content. The fold runs through the middle of the 7.6-inch inner display, which is why Notability is designing its layouts to keep your notes off it.
