Apple appears to be preparing HomePod for Siri AI. HomePod Software 27 contains the system behind Apple’s new AI-powered Siri, known internally as “Linwood,” along with new status lights in the Siri AI colors, according to code findings shared by pdfu.
The catch is that Siri AI is not available on existing HomePod models even though HomePod Software 27 has been released. This raises the possibility that Apple will require new HomePod hardware for the updated Siri experience.
HomePod Software 27 Includes Siri AI Components
The HomePod Software 27 code includes “Linwood,” the system associated with Siri AI. It also contains new status lights using the colors Apple introduced for Siri AI.
Apple has not enabled Siri AI on current HomePod models, so the software discovery does not mean existing speakers are about to receive the feature.
A New HomePod Mini Could Be The Key
Apple is reportedly working on a new HomePod mini with a faster processor. The upcoming model is expected to use an S9 chip or newer, with the S11 chip from Apple Watch Series 12 also being a possibility.
The HomePod mini is not expected to receive a major redesign. Apple could instead focus on the internal hardware, with reports pointing to an N1 networking chip, a newer Ultra Wideband chip and additional colors.
The faster processor could provide the hardware needed for Siri AI.
Siri AI Could Work With A Compatible iPhone
Apple’s current approach with Apple Watch offers a possible clue about how Siri AI could work on HomePod.
Apple Watch Series 9 and later can use Siri AI when paired with an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. A future HomePod mini could similarly rely on a compatible iPhone for some Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features.
Apple has not confirmed that HomePod will work this way.
Apple Is Preparing More Smart Home Hardware
The HomePod mini is reportedly part of a larger push into Apple’s smart home lineup. Apple is also working on an Apple TV 4K with a processor capable of supporting Siri AI and a dedicated home hub with Siri AI integration.
A new full-size HomePod is also in development, although its release timing is still unclear.
The new HomePod mini and other smart home products could launch as soon as October, according to current reports.
What Happens To Existing HomePods?
For now, HomePod Software 27 does not bring Siri AI to existing HomePods. Apple has not confirmed whether any current models will eventually support the new Siri or whether Siri AI will be limited to upcoming hardware.
The software findings point to Apple preparing Siri AI for HomePod, but the current lack of support on existing speakers suggests hardware requirements may be the deciding factor.
