Spotify has updated the ‘Group session’ feature on the music streaming service with new functionality for its premium subscribers. Now the premium subscribers from around the world can listen to same playlists or podcasts with their friends and family at the same time on their own devices.
The first beta version of ‘Group Session’ was launched in May. The feature allowed the participants to not only listen to music but also to share control of the played content in real time. The blog describes the feature as,
“So no matter the distance—whether six feet apart or a thousand miles away—you and the members of your squad can now each listen to the same content at the same time on your own devices.”
How to Create Group Session on Spotify
The updated feature allows a host to create a group session with up to 5 people via an invite or join link sent through a messaging app or social media. Participants will be able to control playback the content in the session like play, pause, skip, select songs in the queue and add more in the playlist. Changes made any participant will be immediately reflected on the devices of the entire group.
Users must update their music streaming app to the latest version to enjoy group music sessions with their friends and family from any part of the world. Follow these steps to do so:
- Tap on the ‘connect’ menu at the bottom left corner of the UI.
- Select ‘start a group session’ option.
- Copy the session link and share it with guests via any messaging or social media app. Participants can also join the session by scanning the Spotify code.
Spotify recommends some activities for users to enjoy the feature by reducing physical distance by virtually connecting them to have a family cookout, romantic podcast session in long-distance relationship, and jogging music session.
“Jam out in real time from each of your backyards while cooking up a storm. And if Mom’s getting carried away with the oldies, you can always change the track.
Setting up a Wind of Change podcast date for you and your long-distance boo. Nothing says romance like some light international espionage.
Coordinating a morning-noon-night group jog with friends in LA, New York, and London, and keeping the same pace across time zones with a Power Run playlist.”
Spotify premium subscription is available for $9.99 per month with a one month free trial for new premium members. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and can be downloaded for App Store and Google Play, respectively.
