Apple Releases tvOS 27.2 Public Beta 2 and HomePod Software 27.2 Public Beta 2

Apple has released the second public betas of tvOS 27.2 and HomePod Software 27.2 to testers. They are the same builds developers received as beta 3 on October 5, so there is nothing new to download if you already run the developer version.

Anyone enrolled in Apple’s Beta Software Program can install them now. Apple TV 4K owners can update through Settings, and our guide to installing the tvOS 27 public beta covers the steps. The update arrives alongside iOS 27.2 public beta 2 and macOS Golden Gate 27.2 public beta 2.

The Visible Changes in tvOS 27.2 Public Beta 2 Are Small

Apple has not published a feature list for tvOS 27.2 or HomePod Software 27.2. The 27.2 betas released today carry a few small changes, including design updates in Apple Books, a redesigned Apple Music logo, and splash screens in a couple of apps for features found earlier. Several of those live on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, so Apple TV 4K and HomePod owners will notice very little.

The tvOS 27.2 cycle began on September 16, when Apple skipped version 27.1. Developers got beta 2 five days later and beta 3 two weeks after that.

HomePod Software 27.2 follows the same schedule. It sits on top of HomePod Software 27, which brought AutoMix and AirPlay improvements to current speakers.

Public Beta 2 Hides New Apple TV 4K and HomePod Features in Its Code

The latest 27.2 code references new features for Apple TV 4K and HomePod that Apple is expected to announce next week. Public beta users will not see any of them as working features, since they are hidden in code until Apple makes an announcement.

Here is what the code has shown so far across the tvOS 27.2 and audioOS 27.2 betas.

  • Apple Intelligence on Apple TV: tvOS 27.2 includes a new Apple Intelligence data-sharing setting and a Siri Messages framework, covered in our post on tvOS 27.2 code hinting at Apple Intelligence.
  • Siri and HomePod surround systems: audioOS 27.2 beta 3 code shows Siri matching a speaker to its surround group, plus a new path for HomePod to pass Siri requests to Apple TV. We covered it in audioOS 27.2 beta 3 and HomePod surround.
  • Four-HomePod surround sound: tvOS 27.2 beta 2 let testers connect an Apple TV 4K to four speakers, two HomePods and two HomePod minis.

The four-speaker setup was unfinished in beta 2. There was no way to assign front and rear roles, so the same audio played from every speaker. One leaker has since questioned whether the feature is true surround sound yet, and Apple has said nothing about it.

Apple Is Reportedly Planning an October 13 Launch for the New Apple TV and HomePod mini

Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new Apple TV and a new HomePod mini on October 13, alongside its smart home hub. The hidden code in tvOS 27.2 and HomePod Software 27.2 lines up with that timing.

The full-size HomePod is reportedly sitting out the October 13 launch. Apple has not confirmed any of the dates or products.
