WhatsApp is testing a new interface for audio calls on iOS and Android

WhatsApp is now working on a new interface for voice calls. WABetainfo found that the new feature is under development and will be available on WhatsApp beta on iOS and Android in a future update.

Recently, the company has made new changes on the platform to improve users’ experience like hide users’ last seen and online status from users that they have never contacted or don’t have in their address book, new duration for disappearing messages, and others. Reportedly, it is also testing new features like undo for status updates, reactions, new voice waveforms for audio messages, and more.

WhatsApp to update the audio call interface with modern design and fresh new look

As seen in the shared screenshot of the new audio call interface, WhatsApp is changing the mono-color background with the two-tone theme with a dark background and a lighter bubble with the receiver’s phone number and display picture. It is mentioned that the redesigned voice call interface will be the same on Android as well.

We have decided to compare these interfaces, so you can understand the changes better. As you can see in this screenshot, WhatsApp is redesigning the interface for a future update in order to make it more compact and modern, organizing the available space: the new redesign will look nice especially while placing group voice calls.

More importantly, the “end-to-end encrypted” indicator is much more visible than before. To highlight the “end-to-end encryption” protection has been the company’s focus recently. Previously, WABetainfo reported that the company is working on new end-to-end encryption indicators for calls and status. The company also expanded end-to-end encryption for chats in backups.

Privacy on WhatsApp became a major issue when the company announced a controversial update to share users’ information with its parent company Facebook (now called Meta). The backlash was so strong that the company abandoned the update altogether and had been touting its end-to-end encryption protection ever since and the upcoming indicators are its culmination.
