WhatsApp is rolling out a one-tap search shortcut for chats and channels on iPhone, cutting out a step that has slowed down search for years. The feature is expected to ship with WhatsApp Messenger for iOS 26.36.74 on the App Store, and it is reaching accounts gradually rather than all at once.
WABetaInfo first spotted this feature in testing back in August, and we covered it at the time as WhatsApp’s attempt at a faster in-chat search flow. The version shipping now looks different from what was running in that beta.
In the August beta, the search shortcut sat at the bottom of the chat screen. WhatsApp changed that before releasing the feature to everyone. The button now appears at the top of the screen, just below the navigation bar, and only when a user scrolls up through the conversation. Scroll back down to the bottom of the chat, and the button disappears.
The repositioning avoids a conflict with another button WhatsApp already places at the bottom of the screen. It also keeps the shortcut out of the way until someone is actually scrolling back through older messages, which is exactly when a search button becomes useful.
Searching inside a single conversation used to take more effort than it should have. A user had to open the chat info screen, tap the search icon there, and get redirected back into the chat in search mode before typing a single keyword.
The new shortcut skips all of that, tapping the button activates search mode directly inside the conversation, and the search experience itself works exactly as it did before, so there is nothing new to learn. WhatsApp is not limiting this to one-on-one and group chats either. Channels get the same shortcut in the same position, which matters most for channels that post frequently and bury older updates fast.
WhatsApp Messenger for iOS 26.36.74 is live on the App Store today, but the search shortcut itself is only reaching some accounts at this stage. WhatsApp says the feature will become visible to more users over the coming weeks, without giving a date for when everyone will have it.
