Apple Has $1 Billion in Chips Sitting Idle as DRAM Shortage Threatens iPhone 18 Pro Launch

Roughly $1 billion worth of Apple processors are sitting idle at TSMC, unable to advance to the next stage of production because the mobile DRAM required to complete chip packaging has not arrived, according to semiconductor analyst Tim Culpan, whose exclusive analysis details a supply chain bottleneck that threatens the September launch of both the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s first foldable iPhone Ultra.

Processor packaging cannot be completed without the corresponding DRAM already in place, meaning the chips Apple designed on TSMC’s new N2 process cannot move downstream to Foxconn for main logic board and final assembly until memory shipments catch up. Apple sources its mobile DRAM primarily from Micron, with SK Hynix and Samsung as secondary suppliers, but tightening global supply has left all three unable to deliver at the pace Apple needs.

Hyperscalers and AI companies are consuming DRAM at a rate that has compressed supply across the board, and Apple is competing for the same constrained pool of chips that data centers are absorbing. Tim Cook acknowledged the situation publicly during Apple’s July 30 earnings call, describing “some very significant constraints currently, with limited flexibility in the supply chain,” which now reads as a fairly direct reference to exactly this problem.

The timing makes this more complicated than a typical supply crunch. Apple is attempting to launch two flagship models simultaneously, the iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone, against a memory supply that cannot comfortably support one. DigiTimes separately reported this week that the foldable’s production timeline remains undecided, even as Foxconn carries out what supply chain sources describe as “final mass-production adjustments,” suggesting the device’s exact launch date is still in flux.

Apple and its assemblers reportedly remain confident they can meet initial demand, but sources familiar with the situation are concerned that online order wait times could stretch out quickly while retail inventory depletes. Apple may be able to ship launch-day stock to those who order in the first minutes, but backlogs could extend far longer than in previous years for anyone who hesitates.

The iPhone 18 Pro introduces the A20 Pro chip, Apple’s first processor built on TSMC’s N2 process, which makes the packaging delay particularly costly given how much Apple has invested in reaching 2nm. The bill of materials for this generation was already under pressure before the memory crunch, and a compressed downstream assembly schedule at Foxconn and BYD, even if DRAM arrives in time, leaves little room for the production ramp that fills store shelves in the weeks after launch rather than just on day one. Analysts had already flagged that price increases for the iPhone 18 Pro were likely; sustained supply tightness would add demand pressure on top of that.
