Made in India iPhone 12 models will be produced by mid-2021 – Report

Apple is planning to produce upcoming ‘iPhone 12’ models in India instead of China. The new falgship models produced in India will be ready to ship by the middle of 2021, according to the Business Standard. Apple’s suppliers and assembly units of Foxconn and Wistron are set up in India.

The tech giant has produced its smartphones in Indian plants before. Recently, the company started the assembling of the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR at the Foxconn plant near Chennai and is also expected to start the assembling of the new iPhone SE by the end of 2020. The need to explore other manufacturing centers in other countries is more immediate after United States President Donald Trump imposed harsher trade tariffs on China.

Apple supplier Wistron has apparently begun test production of the iPhone at its Narasapura plant in Bengaluru. Wistron has reportedly begun hiring as many as 10,000 new staff for its manufacturing facilities in India and the company is likely to begin mass production of the smartphone in October.

Having the iPhone 12 assembled in India will help in reducing the price of the upcoming smartphone lineup. This will also boost the company’s market share in India as Apple will be able to market this smartphone as a mid-range device.

It can be speculated that as the current amount of trade tax imposed by the United States on China makes it harder for Apple to continue business in China, the tech giant might be moving up to a fifth of iPhone production from China to India over the next 5 years.

Apple suppliers Pegatron and Samsung are expected to set up production plants in India, and Foxconn has announced that it plans to invest as much as $1 billion in India, having already established its first manufacturing facility in the country.
