Chirpfold is a free game for the iPhone Duo where folding the phone makes a round little bird flap its wings. A light fold from where you are counts as a flap, so you can play with the phone half open and never have to close it.
The game has been on the App Store since October 20 and works on other iPhone models too. On those phones, and on a closed iPhone Duo, a Fold button in the lower right corner stands in for the hinge. Rounds played with the button do not unlock looks, cannot be shared and stay off the leaderboard.
Chirpfold turns every fold of the iPhone Duo into a wing flap
You hold one half of the iPhone Duo in each hand and fold it inward a little, and the bird flaps. Open the phone back a bit, fold again, and steer between the towers of paper blocks to see how far you can fly.
The wings follow the hinge, and a gauge in the corner shows when a fold is deep enough to count. Every flap also gives you a light haptic tap.
Closing the phone or switching to another app pauses the game. You open the phone and fold to keep flying, and after a crash a single fold starts a new round.
Chirpfold joins the iPhone Duo apps that use the hinge as a controller. Foldfish, a fishing game, turns the hinge into a fishing rod.
Real folds unlock outfits, weather and a Game Center leaderboard
Most looks in the Wardrobe unlock by playing with real folds, through your score, the time of day and the weather. What the bird wears never changes the game, because pillars keep the same size and gaps and trails never hit anything.
What you can change
- 10 colors and 12 accessories, such as hats, sunglasses and a gold medal
- 3 trails that follow the bird and 3 pillar styles
- 13 kinds of weather, each lit up by finishing a real-fold round in it
Twelve looks can only be bought, one at a time, such as the Golden Phoenix and the Paper Crane color. Everything else comes from playing.
Weather and special days
The scene follows your clock through day, dusk and night. If you turn on Local Weather in Settings, the weather outside shows up in the game, from a sun shower with a rainbow to a thunderstorm and snow. Your approximate location is used only to look up the weather, and only after you turn it on.
Special skies need no location.
- Meteor showers bring shooting stars on seven nights a year
- Halloween, from October 29 to 31, brings jack-o’-lanterns, bats and a big orange moon
- Christmas, from December 23 to 25, brings snow, string lights on the pillars and a golden sleigh across the moon
Leaderboard and sharing
A Game Center leaderboard ranks your best score against friends and players everywhere, but only rounds played with real folds on an iPhone Duo count. Signing in is optional, and after each real-fold round you can share a score card stamped “Real fold on iPhone Duo”.
Chirpfold is free with no ads, energy or timers
The game is free to play with no ads, no energy and no timers, and it works offline. Only the leaderboard, local weather and purchases go online.
