iOS 16 running on 81% of all active iPhones, ahead of iOS 17 debut

Apple has finally shared iPadOS 16 and iOS 16 adoption statistics. These figures are based on data collected from devices that transacted on the App Store on May 30, just days before the highly anticipated 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where Apple is expected to unveil iOS 17.

iOS 16 adoption soars with over 80% of iPhones, iPadOS 16 running on 76% of all iPads

The highlight of iOS 16 is a redesigned Lock Screen experience. The software update also offers new features for Mail, WalletMessagesenhanced intelligence with improvements to Live Text and Dictation, and more.

As reported by Apple, a significant 81% of all active iPhones are now running iOS 16, marking a notable increase from the 72% reported in February. Meanwhile, 13% of active iPhones are still operating on iOS 15, with an additional 6% running even older versions of the iOS software. iOS 16 was made available to the public in September and is compatible with iPhone 8 models and newer.

In the iPad realm, Apple reported that 71% of all active iPads are now running iPadOS 16, a substantial leap from the 50% adoption rate observed in February. This demonstrates the continued popularity of the latest iPadOS among users.

When comparing the adoption rates of iOS 15 and iOS 16, the statistics remain quite similar year-over-year. Around this time last year, Apple revealed that 82% of active iPhones were running iOS 15. Therefore, it seems that users have been quick to embrace the latest iOS updates, showing a consistent pattern of adoption.

However, Apple expects the iOS 16 adoption rates to start declining in the coming weeks as the company rolls out the first beta version of iOS 17. This release will be available exclusively to members of Apple’s Developer Program for testing purposes. With the introduction of iOS 17, users will undoubtedly be eager to explore the new features and enhancements that Apple has in store for them.

iOS 16 adoption statistics highlight the impressive reach of Apple’s software updates, with a significant majority of iPhone and iPad users staying up-to-date with the latest versions. This not only reflects the strong brand loyalty that Apple enjoys but also ensures that users can benefit from the latest security patches, performance improvements, and exciting features.

As the tech world eagerly awaits WWDC 2023 and the announcement of iOS 17, it’s clear that Apple continues to maintain its position as a leader in the mobile operating system space, delivering innovative and user-friendly experiences to its customers.
