iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max announced: A15 chip, 120Hz ProMotion, Cinematic Mode, and more

Apple has announced iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max with the most advanced pro camera system ever on iPhone along with a massive improvement to battery life, the new A15 Bionic chip, an advanced 5G experience, and more. Here is a list of everything you need to know about iPhone 13 Pro including features, availability, and price.

Display

iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max feature a Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, supporting an adaptive refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. Offered in both 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes, the display leverages a more efficient OLED panel, new display engine of A15 Bionic, faster GPU performance, and is custom-designed for iOS 15. It is also the brightest display ever on iPhone with up to 25 percent higher max outdoor brightness, at 1000 nits. Apple has also reduced the size of the notch that houses the TrueDeptch camera system by 20%.

Performance

The A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 13 Pro is even more advanced, offering impressive power and efficiency. The chip, which consists of a 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 efficiency cores, is up to 50 percent faster than the leading competition. The 5-core GPU in the Pro lineup is also 50 percent faster than the leading competition.

A new 16-core Neural Engine in A15 which is capable of performing 15.8 trillion operations per second enables even faster machine learning computations for third-party app experiences, as well as features like Live Text in Camera and Siri.

Cameras

The iPhone 13 Pro lineup features new sensors and lenses for all three rear cameras that are optimized to work seamlessly with iOS 15 and powered by the new image signal processor (ISP) in A15. The new pro camera system offers even more pro photography capabilities like improved telephoto zoom, macro photography, Photographic Styles, Cinematic mode, as well as ProRes and Dolby Vision video.

The all-new Wide camera has a larger sensor with 1.9 µm pixels coupled with the larger ƒ/1.5 aperture. The new Ultra Wide camera features a much wider ƒ/1.8 aperture and a new autofocus system. Macro photography is also available for the first time in the Ultra Wide on iPhone. Macro also extends to video including Slo-mo and Time-lapse. The Pro lineup also features a new 77 mm Telephoto camera which offers 3x optical zoom for a total 6x optical zoom range on the camera system.

Along with hardware improvements, two new computational photography features are available for still photo capture: Smart HDR 4 and Photographic Styles. Smart HDR 4 provides improved colors, contrast, and lighting for up to 4 people in a group photo while preserving skin tones. Photographic Styles allow users to personalize their own look for all the photos they take. Unlike filters, Photographic Styles are smartly applied as effects on different parts of an image. In addition, Night mode is available on all cameras in the Pro lineup.

Battery

The Pro lineup features an all-day battery life which is made possible by A15 Bionic, more power-efficient components, a larger battery, and power optimizations. iPhone 13 Pro will last up to one and a half hours longer in a day than iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max will last up to two and a half hours longer in a day than iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Connectivity

Apple says the customized hardware design in the iPhone 13 Pro lineup features more 5G bands therefore it will work in more places on 5G for greater coverage and performance. The tech giant also announced that support for 5G on iPhone will double around the globe will double by the end of 2021 with over 200 carriers worldwide in 60 countries and regions.

iPhone 13 Pro will be available in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and all-new 1TB storage options as Apple has dropped the 64GB entry-level capacity

Pricing and Availability

iPhone 13 Pro lineup will be available in graphite, gold, silver, and sierra blue with iPhone 13 Pro starting at $999 and iPhone 13 Pro Max starting at $1,099. Pre-orders will open on Friday, September 17 at apple.com, while general availability will be from Friday, September 24.
