iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are in stores today, and they bring the biggest jump in camera, chip, and battery specs Apple has shipped on a Pro iPhone in years. Apple opened pre-orders on September 12, and today, September 18, is when units actually reach customers.
The new Pro lineup centers on four areas: camera, performance, battery, and intelligence. Both models come in four finishes, black, silver, glacier, and an all-new burgundy, and start at $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Variable Aperture Camera Is the Headline Feature
iPhone 18 Pro introduces a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, the first time Apple has put aperture control on an iPhone. Six laser-cut blades shift the lens between f/1.48 and f/4, adjusting automatically for lighting and depth of field, or manually through new Pro controls in the Camera app that also cover shutter speed, white balance, and a live histogram.
Apple paired the new sensor with a feature called Apple Reference Image, which signs sensor data at the moment of capture so a photo can later be checked against tampering or AI edits. iThinkDiff broke down how that verification works shortly after the announcement, and early reviews have singled out the variable aperture camera as the standout upgrade of the generation. The Dynamic Island also grew more useful this year, now showing up to three Live Activities at once.
A20 Pro and a New Vapor Chamber Deliver the Biggest Performance Jump Yet
The A20 Pro chip is built on a 2-nanometer process with a 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU that Apple says is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro. A dual 16-core Neural Engine doubles the on-device AI processing power of last year’s chip, a design choice Apple explained in more detail after the announcement.
A redesigned vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro’s attaches directly to the chip, pushing sustained performance up by as much as 40 percent. Battery life grew alongside it. ESIM-only models get up to 36 hours of video playback on iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours on iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone 18 Pro Max now beats both Samsung and Google’s flagships on battery life. Wired charging also got faster, with iPhone 18 Pro reaching 50 percent in around 15 minutes.
Siri AI Arrives in Beta Alongside iOS 27
iPhone 18 Pro is expected to ship with access to Siri AI, an entirely new version of Siri built on Apple Intelligence that uses personal context and onscreen awareness to answer questions and take action across apps. It rolled out in beta with iOS 27 on September 14, ahead of today’s hardware launch, though Siri AI is not yet available to users in the EU.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are available today in more than 65 countries and regions, including the US, UK, Canada, Japan, and the UAE, with 20 more countries following on September 25.
