WhatsApp group status is one of four updates announced on October 29 that make busy group chats easier to catch up on. The others are pinned messages that can stay pinned forever, message history you can send after someone has joined, and a filter for mentions and replies.

A new filter shows every group where you were mentioned or replied to
A new WhatsApp chat filter called Mentions and replies collects every unread group conversation where someone mentioned you or sent you a direct reply, including @all messages. If you sit in a dozen busy groups, that turns a long scroll through the chat list into a short list of chats where someone is waiting on you. It builds on the earlier chat filters, which sort the list by unread status and chat type.
Two existing tools help in the same big groups. You can reply privately to one person so a side chat stays out of the main thread, and member tags show a role or relationship next to your name, such as treasurer in a volunteer group. Polls can also be set to a single answer when the group needs a decision.
Message history and permanent pins help late joiners catch up
WhatsApp already let you send recent messages to new members when you add them to a group. WhatsApp says you can now send them message history after they have joined by tapping their name in the chat. That helps when you add someone without turning the option on.
You choose how many recent messages to send, and pinned messages can go along with them. That covers the gap for late joiners, who do not see a pin that was set before they arrived. The new member gets a notification, and the group sees a system message saying history was sent.
When someone joins through an invite link, the chat shows a Send message history option. Admins can switch off the ability for members to send history in group permissions. The history stays end-to-end encrypted, the same as personal chats.
Pinned messages can now stay pinned forever. The earlier message pinning options were 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, with up to four pinned messages in a chat, so a rule or an address the group keeps needing no longer expires. In groups, admins decide whether members can pin, and everyone sees a system message naming who pinned it.
WhatsApp group status stays inside one group and lasts 24 hours
Group status lets you share casual updates with a specific group, so a post for the running club chat goes only to that group. Everyone in the group can view and react to it and add their own status, and like regular status updates it disappears after 24 hours.
