Apple releases macOS Monterey 12.5.1 with security fixes

Apple has released macOS Monterey 12.5.1 for all compatible Macs. The update features two important security fixes, both of which may have been actively exploited.

Apple has not included any new features in this release, except for the security fixes. The release notes simply mention the following:

This update is recommended for all users and improves the security of macOS.

The two security fixes focus on the Kernel and WebKit. Both security flaws could allow the execution of arbitrary code.

Kernel

Available for: macOS Monterey

Impact: An application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.

Description: An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.

WebKit

Available for: macOS Monterey

Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.

Apple has previously released macOS Monterey 12.5 with the following updates:

macOS Monterey 12.5 includes enhancements, bug fixes and security updates.

• TV app adds the option to restart a live sports game already in-progress and pause, rewind, or fast-forward
• Fixes an issue in Safari where a tab may revert back to a previous page

Some features may not be available for all regions, or on all Apple devices.

  • iMac (later 2015 and later)
  • iMac Pro (2017 and later)

Install macOS Monterey 12.5.1

To install the update, open System Preference, and go to Software Update. Once the update appears, click on Install Now. If you have automatic updates enabled, you will simply be asked to restart your Mac to complete the update process.
