watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and visionOS 27.2 Release Candidates Are Out

Apple has seeded release candidates of watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and visionOS 27.2 to developers. The watchOS 27.2 and visionOS 27.2 builds follow beta 4 from October 13, while tvOS 27.2 follows beta 3 from October 5, since Apple never released a tvOS 27.2 beta 4.

Apple skipped version 27.1 and went straight to 27.2 for these platforms, and the iOS 27.2 release candidate arrived the same day. A release candidate is meant to be the exact software that ships, so changes from here are usually small.

watchOS 27.2

watchOS 27.2 brings back the App Switcher with a press and hold gesture

watchOS 27 removed the old double-click shortcut on the Digital Crown, and the App Switcher disappeared with it. watchOS 27.2 beta 2 restored it with a different gesture. Inside an app, you press and hold the bottom of the screen, then turn the Digital Crown to scroll through recent apps or swipe left on one and tap the X to remove it.

Apple has not confirmed that this exact gesture is final, so check it once the public release arrives. watchOS 27 runs on the Apple Watch Series 9 and later, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, and the Apple Watch SE 3.

The redesigned Health app is the feature to leave off your list. It carried a readiness score for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 owners, and Apple pulled it from the iOS 27.2 beta and said it will launch later in the year. watchOS 27.2 has been in testing since September 16, with beta 2 on September 21, beta 3 on October 5, and beta 4 on October 13.

tvOS 27.2 is the update that adds Siri AI to Apple TV 4K

Apple says Siri AI arrives with tvOS 27.2 as a beta on the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and every model after it. That means owners of the older boxes get it without buying new hardware. Siri AI shows full-screen results with poster art from the Apple TV app, and it opens a compact overlay while a show plays so you can ask where it was filmed or whether it suits a teenager.

The owner of the home in the Home app needs an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad on the latest software, with Siri AI turned on and set to a supported language. At launch, Siri AI is available in English in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the UK.

Hands-free Siri and four-speaker surround sound stay exclusive to the new Apple TV 4K (4th generation). The surround setup needs matching front and rear pairs of HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers.

Apple has not detailed any visionOS 27.2 changes for Apple Vision Pro

Apple has not said what visionOS 27.2 adds for Apple Vision Pro, and the same was true through beta 4. The release candidate suggests the update is close to done, but there is no feature list to point to yet.

Developers can install all three release candidates from Software Update in the Settings app on each device. Back up first, since this is still pre-release software, and avoid putting it on the Apple Watch or Apple TV 4K you rely on every day.

Apple should release all three before the Apple TV 4K ships on November 13

Apple is expected to release these updates by the end of October, likely early next week, and it has not announced a firm date. HomePod mini 2 uses HomePod Software 27.2 and ships Friday, October 30, two weeks before the new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) goes on sale Friday, November 13 for $299.
