Google releases YouTube Music app for Apple Watch – works on watchOS 6.0 and later

Following the big Android TV update yesterday, Google has just released an Apple Watch app for YouTube Music. The app provides basic playback controls and allows browsing music from the user’s phone.

With the new Apple Watch app for YouTube Music, users can perform all the standard music playback controls like play/pause, skip to next or previous tracks, cast, and like songs. According to the App Store listing, the new YouTube Music’s Apple Watch app is compatible with watchOS 6.0 and later.

Apple Watch gets YouTube Music app for its platform

The Apple Watch app is rolling out with version 3.88 of YouTube Music. Created after the default Apple Music experience, it starts with a user’s 11 most recent playlists, albums, songs, and artists as cover art.

On the home page of the app, users will find recent playlists. In the Library section, users can view last played tracks, play downloaded music, access playlists, albums, songs, artists, and subscriptions. According to the report, users can control the volume levels using the digital crown.

There is also complication support to provide quick access to Now Playing. Not all sizes/watch faces are available. The most basic design just shows a YT Music icon, while another displays the current song and artist name. This app does not provide offline access to songs or streaming. A user’s iPhone must be near them for this remote controller to work.

Since Google is focusing heavily on YouTube Music as it prepares to completely shut down Google Play Music by the end of the year, it makes sense that the search engine giant is trying to attract more users in the Apple ecosystem. This may be why the new YouTube Music app for Apple Watch comes before even Google’s Wear OS has one. However, a Google employee recently stated that an app for Wear OS is in the works and will arrive in the ‘coming months’.

Version 3.88 of YouTube Music for Apple Watch is now available in the App Store.
