Apple is already testing iOS 27.0.1, a follow-up to iOS 27 that should arrive as a minor update with bug fixes, security patches or both. Nothing is official yet, and no release date has been given.
The update turned up in MacRumors’ visitor logs. Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, so this would be the first patch since launch, and it could show up over the next few days or weeks.
Face ID Fixes Might Be Part of The Release
Software bugs tend to surface soon after new iPhones launch, once the phones reach millions of people. This year some iPhone 18 Pro owners have reported Face ID problems, including a Face ID bug that can trigger random reboots. That makes Face ID fixes or improvements the most likely item in iOS 27.0.1, though Apple has not confirmed anything.
Other issues could ride along in the same release. Apple often uses the first point update to patch bugs that only show up at scale, and to close security holes found after the public launch.
The Watch Update Is Already Out
The Apple Watch already has its patch, since Apple released watchOS 27.0.1 for the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 on September 23 to fix an issue that could make the watch restart unexpectedly.
Apple is also testing a bigger update, and the iOS 27.2 public beta brings the redesigned Health app to testers, although that release is expected later this year and runs on a separate track from the bug-fix update.
When iOS 27.0.1 does arrive, the steps are the same as for any iPhone update.
- Back up the iPhone to iCloud or a computer first
- Open Settings, go to General, then Software Update, and tap Update Now
- Turn on Automatic Updates in the same menu to get future patches without checking
Going back is no longer an option once an iPhone is on the new release, because Apple no longer lets you downgrade from iOS 27 to iOS 26.
A patch this soon after launch is normal, and it points to Face ID as the area Apple is watching most closely on the iPhone 18 Pro. Anyone hitting reboots or Face ID failures should keep an eye on Software Update and install iOS 27.0.1 as soon as it appears.
