Apple has hinted that it could introduce higher iCloud+ subscription options as Siri AI rolls out, suggesting the company’s next generation of AI features may encourage some users to upgrade their cloud storage plans.
The comments came during Apple’s Q3 2026 earnings call after analysts asked whether increased use of Siri AI would affect Apple’s infrastructure costs. CEO Tim Cook said the company is still evaluating how the feature will be used but expects some customers will require additional iCloud+ capacity over time.
Cook explained that Siri AI relies on a hybrid approach, with requests processed both on-device and through Apple’s cloud infrastructure. While Apple continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure, he also suggested there could be new opportunities for iCloud+ as adoption grows.
We do believe there will be people who want to use it a lot and so we will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud+, and we’ll see how the pickup for that is.
Cook emphasized that Apple has not finalized its plans, making it clear the company is still evaluating how customers will use Siri AI as it becomes more widely available.
Apple is expanding iCloud+’s role in Apple Intelligence
Cook’s comments build on changes Apple announced at WWDC26. With iOS 27, the company confirmed that some cloud-powered Apple Intelligence features will have daily usage limits, while most iCloud+ subscribers will receive higher allowances than users on free accounts.
Apple said advanced features such as AI image generation rely on its cloud infrastructure, allowing iCloud+ subscribers to use them more frequently than free users. While Apple has not shared the exact daily limits, the move marked the first time the company directly tied expanded Apple Intelligence access to an iCloud+ subscription.
Cook’s latest remarks suggest Apple could extend that strategy even further. Rather than only offering higher daily AI limits, the company is now exploring additional iCloud+ upgrade options for customers who make extensive use of Siri AI and other cloud-powered Apple Intelligence features.
Apple did not say Siri AI itself would require a paid subscription. However, the company appears to be positioning iCloud+ as the primary way to offer additional AI capacity for users who rely heavily on cloud-powered Apple Intelligence features.
Unlike previous versions of Siri, Siri AI is deeply integrated across Apple’s ecosystem and understands personal context, allowing it to reference information from apps, messages, calendars, emails, and other on-device data to complete more complex requests. As more users adopt Siri AI, larger iCloud+ plans could become an option for those who want expanded AI usage alongside additional cloud storage.
Apple is investing heavily in AI infrastructure
Cook also said Apple has significantly increased spending on artificial intelligence, including investments in both its own data centers and third-party cloud infrastructure.
He described Siri AI as one of Apple’s biggest software initiatives and said feedback from both the developer and public betas has been “overwhelmingly positive.”
Apple introduced Siri AI at WWDC26 as part of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. The assistant can understand personal context, maintain conversations across requests, and perform actions across apps using Apple’s on-device intelligence and Private Cloud Compute.
Apple has not announced when additional iCloud+ plans could arrive or whether they would be exclusive to Siri AI users. For now, the company says it is continuing to evaluate customer demand as Siri AI rolls out later this year.
