Everything new in iOS 17 Beta 5: features, improvements and fixes

Apple has seeded iOS 17 beta 5 to developers and beta testers, along with the fifth developer beta of iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10, tvOS 17, HomePodOS 17, and Studio Display 17. The company also released AirPods Beta 3 firmware (6A5289c).

iOS 17 beta 5 was released two weeks after Apple seeded iOS 17 beta 4 and appears to be a significant update. Its tech specs are as follows:

  • Storage: 1.1GB on iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • Build no: iOS 17.0 (21A5303d). The “d” suggests we are close to the final build.
  • Modem Firmware: 2.08.01

Reportedly, Apple will release iOS 17 to everyone on September 12 after the launch event of the new iPhone 15 series, Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and other devices.

Here are the new features, improvements, and fixes found in the latest iOS 17 beta 5 which you can expect to see in the final iOS 17 version.

New features and UI changes in iOS 17 Beta 5

  • Improved prompt for Live Voicemail for the caller. The new prompt states that the call has been forwarded and the caller can leave a message. Previously, the prompt said that the receiver might pick up the call to keep the caller waiting while it recorded voicemail.
  • New animation sound for Airdrop and Namedrop. Previously, there was only visual animation for Airdrop and Namedrop.

  • New Shazam music recognition animation in Lock Screen and Dynamic Island for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

  • Settings app has added new options and UI changes in the following apps:
    • Camera app has repositioned the “Read Video”, “Record Slo-mo” and “Record Cinematic” on top of the UI.
    • Location Services in the Privacy and Security option has rearranged the order of System Services and added a new option, “Alerts & Shortcuts Automations”. Settings app > Privacy and Security > Location Services > System Service.
  • UI changes in the Set of Mind feature in the Health app like a new icon for LOG an Emotion or Mood, and changes in color and saturation of text, and order of articles.
  • Text of the “Update” and “Get” buttons in the App Store switched from Upper case to Lower case.
  • Location automation in the Shortcuts app regains the “Run After Confirmation” and “Run Immediately” options which were removed in iOS 17 beta 4.
  • New splash screen for Apple Music which does not list new features like newly released Own and Discovery Stations on the service.

Resolved bugs in iOS 17 beta 5

  • Screen Time bug fixed which reset time limits and enabled children to override the previously established time limits on their apps and games. The feature also faced lag issues.
  • ProMotion stutter in iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max is fixed.
  • Content or ad blockers are working. Previously, the tool did not block ads.

Unresolved bugs in iOS 17 beta 5

  • The Notification Center bug in the Lock Screen which causes lag has not been fixed.
