The decision to go virtual is made in the light of the current global COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the health crisis, World Health Organization has directed citizens of the world to maintain social distancing and remain in isolation to break the chain of virus transmission. Therefore, like Apple WWDC and Sony PS5 online events, Niantic is complying by health care orders and is hosting the Pokémon GO Fest online for trainers across the globe. This Fest will be a good opportunity for trainers to expand their social circle.

COVID-19 is affecting most activities world-wide: social, economic, political, and educational. Due to the prevailing health crisis, in March 2020, Niantic postponed its Pokémon GO Safari Zone event, as public gatherings are prohibited in the pandemic. However, the developer is introducing solutions to social and physical immobility by offering tasks to be completed at home to earn rewards.

Pokémon GO Fest

Since 2017, Niantic annually hosts Pokémon GO Fest as an exclusive summer event over the weekend at various selected locations as a face-to-face community building opportunity and chances to earn special rewards. Last year, individual Fest events were held in three cities, Chicago, Yokohama and Dortmund in United States with over 600,000 attendees.

As all live events, Pokémon GO Fest , Pokémon GO Safari Zone and Community Day are hosted to maintain and increase trainers interest and engagement in the game which has proven to be success for Niantic with up to 2 million players participating in the events every year. It is also reported that in 2019 the Pokémon GO live events generated $249 million in tourism revenue.

Recently, the team announced new challenges, events and game-play features for trainers to enjoy.
